School board hears
report on student
emotional health
Pandemic has “taken a toll”

students in a presentation at
the Morrow County School
Board meeting held via
Zoom on Monday evening.
She told the board that
the COVID pandemic has
“taken a toll” on the stu-
dents, with many having
“feelings of anxiety, de-
pression, grief and isola-
tion.” Pointing out that
children have “really big
emotions”, much of the fo-
cus is on self-awareness so
that students can accurately
identify their emotions and
use calming activities to
help themselves, such as
breathing deeply, stretch-
ing, using muscle relaxation
techniques, and by simply
talking to them.
Board member Barney
Lindsay asked, “What are
we doing to make sure no
one is slipping through the
cracks?” In response, Su-
perintendent Dirk Dirksen
provided an update on men-
tal health support, including
recognizing students who
don’t ask for help, watching
out for changes in students’
behavior, and monitoring
students’ attendance. “Now
we have full-time counsel-
ors,” said Dirksen. “We’re
really making an effort. . .
as we move through these
tough times,” he said, not-
ing that the district, which
previously had three coun-
selors, now has 14.
He also spoke of the
possibility of providing
COVID tests for students
instead of quarantining
them, so they would not
have to miss school. Also
mentioned was a vaccina-
tion for children five to 11
years old, however “not
talked about as a mandate,”
but instead “going through
a normal process in regard
to vaccination.” But, he
reminded, “Everything can
change.”
Dirksen said that the
district is in “a lot better
shape in terms of activi-
ties” and commented that
it was “nice to talk about
student activities, versus a
year ago.” He said he was
excited and “appreciated
the school board for (main-
taining) activities beyond
the four walls of the class-
room.”
In a staffing update, it
was reported that 16 peo-
ple have resigned from
the district for “umpteen
reasons,” with “only three
COVID-related.” Dirksen
commented that the number
of resignations was “kind
of a normal number.” “It’s
a struggle (hiring people),
but it’s been a struggle for
five-10 years.” According
to Erin Stocker, MCSD
human resources director,
the district has 306 employ-
ees. “We’re still hiring and
needing people as we go
along,” said Dirksen. “We
could always use more.”
Concerning replacing
Dirksen, who has given
notice of his retirement,
effective June 30 of 2022,
the board approved a school
superintendent search pro-
posal with the Oregon
School Board Association.
Executive secretary/human
resources assistant Cheryl
Costello has also given
notice of her retirement,
effective June 30.
In regard to moving
forward with the proposed
infrastructure bond issue
in the spring, Dirksen said
that the decision will be
made in January. Board
members acknowledged
that it may be harder to pass
a bond measure, but gener-
ally supported the need for
bond approval for updates
to school facilities.
