The high school cross
country runners competed
at districts this past Friday
in John Day. Some of the
toughest competition in the
state lies in this district, so
it was truly a day to come
out and compete.
Leading the girls was
Hailey Heideman, who
crossed the finish line in
eighth place with a time
of 21:26.7. After her was
Hannah Finch (22:12.4)
followed closely by Irelynn
Kollman (22:22.0) and Ky-
lie Boor (22:24.7). Sierra
Greenup finished the course
shortly afterwards, with a
time of 25:01.2. This was
the last race of the season
for the girls, who placed
third as a team.
Trevor Nichols showed
up on Friday with a time
of 16:01.3. This put him in
second place and qualified
him for state individually.
Following him was Edward
Ellsworth, who finished
in 18:13.1. Jacob Finch
(18:37.6), Joseph Sherman
(18:40.9) and Kamron Dru-
ry (19:02.7) crossed the line
one after the other. Trailing
behind them was Roen
Waite, who capped off the
boys’ runs with a 21:53.8.
The boys placed second
overall, qualifying all six of
them to run at state.
Nearly every Mustang
set a new personal or sea-
son record at the district
meet. Though the season is
now over for the girls, the
future is looking bright with
strong runners like Kollman
and Greenup.
The OSAA Cross
Country 1A/2A/3A State
Championships will be held
this Saturday, November 6
at Lane Community Col-
lege. 1A/2A Boys will race
at approximately 10:35
a.m. Heppner fans are en-
couraged to attend the meet
or watch the live results
through athletic.net.
On Halloween, the
middle school girls com-
peted in the Stumptown
Running Middle School
Championships at Western
Oregon University. Over-
all, the girls placed fifth
out of the 12 other teams.
Lily Nichols led Heppner’s
pack in 33 rd place, finishing
the 3,000 meter course in
11:48.9. Brooklyn Hen-
dricks and Riley Archer
finished after her, followed
by Lizzie Ginn, who set a
new personal record, and
Jules Archer. It has been a
successful season for both
Heppner’s girls and boys,
leading us to wonder what
could be in store for next
year. Good luck to the boys
at state.
Good News Only
By Doris Brosnan
Inquiring minds want
to know: The space between
the sidewalks and the street
pavement (known various-
ly as boulevard, median,
hell strip, parkway, verge,
tree belt) will eventually
be covered with stamped
cement to resemble rock.
(Picture the cement wall
along Court Street?) Such
strips become the respon-
sibility of property owners,
apparently, so the cement
will certainly be easier
maintenance than would
be grass, trees, plants. It
probably won’t happen un-
til after the winter weather,
according to city hall.
Last Thursday, in front
of the Home Health of-
fice, a litter of dachshunds
seemed to be gathered but
turned out to be the Home
Health staff in costumes.
Also included in the cluster
was “Cruella Deville.” This
great effort was just one
of the health district’s de-
partments’ competitors for
the best Halloween theme
and costumes. (Winner and
more info not available at
submission time.)
That group was passed
by streams of preschool-
ers from Sage Garden and
from Heppner Day Care
in a delightful variety of
costumes, as they paraded
down the street, stopping to
trick-or-treat at businesses
along their way. Some of
those cute, scary and cre-
ative costumes were out
and about again, joined by
many older students, for the
“Trunk or Treat” event at
the fairgrounds and finally
for Halloween.
Who is ready for the
“fall back” switch of our
clocks on Sunday? How
much difference will it
make, after we have had
that added hour to rest be-
fore starting our Monday?
It will make the BEO clock
read correctly.
Please, share your rea-
sons to smile by sending
your good-news tidbits
before Monday afternoon
to dbrosnan123@gmail.

Here’s hoping that
some good news comes to
everyone reading this.
