Cross country prepares for districts
By Hannah Finch
Last Thursday, October
14, Mustang cross country
raced in Vernonia, which is
about an hour’s drive past
Portland. The Mustangs
faced many schools that
they hadn’t seen before and
had to tackle a course that
they were unfamiliar with.
Though it was a long day
for our runners, they didn’t
let that show through in
their performance.
Lily Nichols was the
first girl to cross the finish
line at 11:29.6. Riley Archer
trailed right behind her and
placed second at 11:56.1.
The girls didn’t stop here,
though. Right behind them
was Brooklyn Hendricks,
who ran a time of 12:04.5
and placed fourth. After
that was Hailey McDaniel,
who placed ninth and ran 13
minutes flat. Sixth grader
Lizzie Ginn (11 th place) and
Jules Archer (12 th place)
finished side by side less
than a minute later. The
middle school girls finished
first overall as a team with
a score of 20.
For the varsity boys,
four out of the six runners
placed in the top 20. Trevor
Nichols led the pack, plac-
ing second with a time of
16:13.4. Overall, it was a
close call between Heppner,
Knappa and Vernonia, with
only five points separating
the three schools. In the
end, the Heppner boys won
with a total score of 69.
Although they were
missing their top runner, the
varsity girls still showed up
to compete. Hannah Finch
placed eighth with a time of
22:20.8. Kylie Boor (15 th )
and Irelynn Kollman (16 th )
battled towards the end of
their race and finished one
after the other, soon fol-
lowed by Harley Anderson.
This week brings
crunch time for Heppner’s
runners. On Thursday, Oc-
tober 21, the high school
team will be travelling to
John Day to race. The mid-
dle schoolers will be go-
ing to the Eastern Oregon
Championships meet the
next day, Friday, October
22. Eastern Oregon is made
up of some of the best
districts, so there will be
some competition. In turn,
the middle school girls are
looking as strong as ever
and are currently ranked
10 th among schools 1A-6A.
The girls are first in the
district and ranked fourth
among schools in eastern
Oregon. For the middle
school boys, Cooper Wight
is currently ranked second
in the district individually.
High school districts
will be held in John Day
next week on Friday, Oc-
tober 29. The varsity girls
will race at 4:30 p.m. and
the varsity boys will race at
5 p.m. There, the Mustangs
will compete for a spot at
state.
