MCSD
superinten- Jeff Zimmer-
d e n t D i r k man
Dirksen, via
video-call, responded, “If
we want to keep the school
doors open” it is neces-
sary for the district to not
defy the state,” “whether or
not we disagree. I’m very
concerned about any man-
dates.” However, he added,
“We’re not just sitting here
and adopting the mandate.
We are working on it and
addressing it.”
“COVID cases are
higher than a year ago, but
we’ve continued to stay
open,” said Dirksen, add-
ing that he was “worried
about the fatigue of staff”,
students and parents. “It
feels like it’s late in the
year, but it’s October,” he
said. “We have to be as
thoughtful as possible as
we go forward.” He added,
“There was no evidence
of in-school spread, in this
year or last.”
Dirksen said that he
was also very concerned
about the “huge learning
loss” and “achievement
gap”, which is “widest in
children from poverty,” es-
pecially during the COVID
epidemic.
“Morrow County
citizen Jeff Zimmerman
testified against the mask
mandate saying, “Putting a
mask on a child for hours a
day…in my opinion, that’s
child abuse. It’s personal to
me. I don’t know your child,
but I care about them.”
Also at the meeting,
the board approved ap-
pointment of three board
members to the upcom-
ing Oregon School Board
Association superinten-
dent search for the Morrow
County School District in
preparation for the retire-
ment of current superinten-
dent Dirksen.

board:
