EIGHT - Heppner Gazette-Times, Heppner, Oregon Wednesday, September 1, 2021 Local woman grows, distributes flowers A View from the Hill Seed and Trowel sells DIY bouquets at Willow Creek Market Haley Winters harvests the blooms in her garden in Lexington. As the first frost of the season approaches, which is typically in early October in Morrow County, so does the anniversary of the idea that started Seed and Trowel Flowers. Haley Winters, Lexington, has always had a garden at her home, but for the 2020 growing sea- son she decided to plant flowers only. “Growing flowers and being able to share the beauty of God’s creation led to joy for both me and the recipients of my flowers,” Winters told the Gazette. In October 2020 she opened her garden up to the community to “get the flowers before the frost.” That initial event inspired Haley to launch a new local business, Seed and Trowel Flowers. The idea was born as 2020s flowers faded, but work planning the 2021 garden was beginning. Haley was very inten- tional about what varieties of flowers to grow in her relatively small farming space. Starting seeds in- doors began in January 2021, and as the weather warmed, different varieties were planted outside. Now that the heat of summer has passed, flowers like cos- mos, zinnias, and dahlias are in full bloom. Seed and Trowel Flow- ers offered summer bouquet subscriptions for the first time this year. Subscribers signed up to have flower bouquets delivered to them weekly, every other week or monthly throughout the summer. Bouquets were all crafted from flowers grown by Winters right in Lexington. She is currently planning the details for a spring bouquet subscription for spring 2022. Along with bouquet subscriptions, Seed and Trowel also participated in this year’s Willow Creek Farmer’s Market where customers could select their own blooms for a DIY bouquet. With the market coming to a close for the year, bouquets from Seed and Trowel can still be found at Flood Town Books on Main Street in Heppner. Seed and Trowel Flow- ers plans to be at Echo’s Market on September 4, September 18 and October 2 from 4-7 p.m. For more information and updates, follow Seed & Trowel on Instagram and Facebook. Local fire departments remember 9/11 th This year marks the 20 anniversary of the attack on the World Trade Center. A committee representing the Heppner, Lexington and Ione Volunteer Fire Depart- ments is coming together to put on an event to remem- ber the 343 firefighters who lost their lives that day. There will be a silent parade through Heppner, opening ceremonies with the raising of our flag and patriotic songs, and the most important activity, the stair climb. Teams of firefighters from each of the three communities will climb 110 flights of stairs to remember the 110 flights of stairs in the World Trade Center. People of the com- munity can also participate by walking the equivalent steps. Other activities of the day will be firefighter themed activities for people of all ages, a pancake break- fast and barbecue lunch. The purpose of this event is to honor the heroes that sacrificed on 9/11 and the local heroes. Those who wish to par- ticipate may volunteer on Saturday, September 11 for setup, registration, chil- dren’s activities and break- By Doris Brosnan Most residents at Wil- low Creek Terrace view the fall season with pleasure, so the mild, sunny days that have jumped the gun on the calendar’s supposed first day of fall have been welcomed. The al fresco of “Eat Outside Day” yester- day could only be success- ful in such weather. This Saturday, Bon- nie Gates will be celebrat- ing her 101 st birthday with neighbors and family. Will Bonnie get a second piece of birthday cake that day, since it is also “Eat an Extra Dessert Day”? On the 9 th , Rita Bowman will be cel- ebrating her birthday, too. Will she choose hotdogs for her birthday lunch? Just a question because that is the day for celebrating the 1884 introduction of the American hotdog. Foods in the highlight on a few September days include Cheese Pizza on the 5 th , Bananas and Chocolate Milk Shakes on the 12 th , and Cheeseburgers on the 18 th . The end of summer will be celebrated a couple of days early, on the 17 th , with a luau party. On the day after Sep- tember 12 Grandparents Day, the grandparents at the Terrace will have photo opportunities, and on the 24 th , everyone will be en- couraged to join the craft party devoted to making Halloween decorations for their apartment doors. Last month, on the 25 th , six residents joined the gathering for the Wizard of Oz showing on its 82 nd anniversary. And during the days of Terrace Olym- pics, August 11-13, four residents earned medals: Ginger O’Brien won one gold, three silvers and one bronze; Dorothy Green won one gold, one silver and two bronze; Rita Bowman won two gold and two bronze; and Ray Harper won one gold and one silver. Con- grats, Olympians. Assisting residents as needed and sharing these entertaining events can be fulfilling and enjoyable, so individuals who want to know more about the job opportunities at the Terrace are encouraged to look online and/or call 541-676- 0004 for information. This is also true for individuals who want to know more about the two available apartments.
