Doherty home earns June yard Canine team performs
of the month
A corner lot under two shady evergreens have earned Chad and Alicia Doherty Yard of the
Month for June.
Feta and Reed had to wear shoes to protect the floor while they performed for the Ione Library
Summer Reading group.

ways had a beautiful garden
wherever they lived with
lots of flowers, including
petunias.
Employed at Wheat-
land Insurance for five
years now as personal lines
manager, Alicia previously
worked at Kennewick Gen-
eral Hospital for 14 years.
Chad grew up in Hep-
pner and has also lived in
Hermiston and Portland
when employed by Safe-
way. He fought fires with
the US Forest Service, too,
but has been with the City
of Heppner for 17 years,
now as public works direc-
tor, including making sure
our town’s utilities are oper-
able and our parks are well
taken care of. While Chad
states that all anyone needs
to do to have a nice yard
is “make sure the water is
working and kill any bugs,”
the Doherty’s yard shows
TLC has been added, too.
Yard of the Month is
co-sponsored by the Hep-
pner Volunteers, MCGG/
Green Feed Store, and the
City of Heppner.
The Border Collie
International Performing
Canine Team thrilled the
audience at Ione Library’s
Summer Reading Program
on June 29. Because of the
weather the team and audi-
ence of 47 children and 20
adults met in the American
Legion Hall where the air
conditioning was available.
Rescue dogs Feta and
Reed demonstrated their
skills at soccer, frisbee
and football. The shoes
they wore for traction and
to protect the floor proved
a distraction to the dogs,
but entertainment for the
kids as Feta often stopped
the show to remove her
boots. Wiggles joined the
audience to show off her
Oregon themed outfit and
sneak a few pats and kisses
from the onlookers.
Handler Greg Gus-
tafson reported he was
pleased with the reception
he and the dogs received
and hopes to come back to
perform again.

Even in 100+ degrees,
the front yard at 390 W.
Union remains shady and
cool. The automatic un-
derground sprinklers that
the couple installed to-
gether last year keep the
lawn green. Digging all
the trenches for the irriga-
tion system by hand was
a bit challenging through
the tree roots, so Alicia
discovered that a Sawzall
makes a handy root cutter.
They found their soil to be
good, not rocky at all and
the project only took about
three weeks total.
Chad does regular
maintenance on the lawn to
keep the weeds out. Other
upkeep has been pressure
washing the deck, replacing
some boards, then painting
with Deckover. A board
fence they built is preserved
with stain.
The Doherty’s favorite
place in their yard is the
long front porch enjoying
hummingbirds at the feed-
er and butterflies visiting
the four large, matching
flower boxes full of bright
petunias, Alicia’s favorite
flowers. Chad has all flower
containers on drip lines and
feeds them with a fertilizer
