Lexington May Day event deemed a success

After everything being
closed down for the past
year due to COVID, Lex-
ington mayor Juli Kennedy
decided people needed to
get out and live again. With
that thought in mind, she
asked Lexington residents
to help plan a May Day cel-
ebration, which took place
last Saturday.
The committee met
several times in April to
decide exactly what the
event should look like. The
decision was made to hold a
parade, a pie social, raffles,
kids’ games and crafts,
and a place for residents to
just sit and visit with their
neighbors.
On May 1, parade par-
ticipants began to line up
a little after 10 a.m. at the
town hall with the parade
beginning promptly at 11.
Long time Lexington resi-
dent, Ray Papineau served
as the Grand Marshal. From
the town hall, the parade
proceeded to Arcade Street
and continued the length of
the street. At A St., the pro-
cession crossed the high-
way, went around a couple
of blocks and came back
to Arcade St, ending back
at the town hall. Kids and
adults lined the street to
fill their bags with candy
thrown from ATVs, UTVs,
trucks, classic cars, fire
trucks and farm trucks.
After the parade, 185
slices of pie were served
and six whole pies were
sent home with area res-
idents. Pies were baked
and donated by Lexington
residents and helped satisfy
a sweet tooth or two. Tacos

feed the hungry crowd as
adults visited and the kids
enjoyed treats, coloring
pages and pictures with
the fire trucks, thanks to
Lexington Fire Department
volunteers.
A bike was donated and
raffled for the kids, with
the winner being Dillon
DeBoer. Other items donat-
ed and raffled were a bird
house won by Jay Papineau,
hanging baskets won by
Sheila Miller and Carmen
Williams, a garden basket
won by Donna Smith, a
flower arrangement won by
Rachel Schonbachler, ear
buds won by Emily Thoren,
a croquet set won by Sofia
Di Salvo and coffee with
gift cards won by Cindy
Sumner and Joann Gurr.
The jar collecting donations
for Make-A-Wish collected
$222 from generous donors.
Mayor Juli Kennedy
told the Gazette, “The idea
was only born a few months
ago and we were not sure
if we could pull it off, but
when the day came it was
overwhelming to see the
response from our com-
munities. The laughter,
visiting, children every-
where, were just what we
needed. It has been a tough
year for so many and we
needed something positive,
something to look forward
to. Family, neighbors and
friends all coming together
to enjoy each other without
the stresses of the outside
and a day to just relax and
have hope for another year
to come together with other
events.”
John Kilkenny believes we need county wide equitable
distribution of County CREZ money.
