She said if there is fine money going to be taken out of the justice court system and into the Irrigon municipal court then either the sheriff ’s office or the justice court budgets would have to be reduced. “That money has to come from somewhere,” she pointed out. “Justice court income supports 82 percent of the sheriff’s bud- get. There is a general fund discussion that has to take place before the next (sher- iff) contract because there is a huge dollar change there,” she added. We are deeply rooted in Agriculture and we love being a part of Growing Your Generations Together. especially if the justice court fine money were lost to Irrigon’s new municipal court. “I don’t personally desire to move away from the contract,” Lindsay said. “I think it is important, but I think we need to make an analysis of what the true cost is especially when part of the compensation is missing,” she told the other commissioners and Matlack. “The city of Irrigon is just going to have to figure out that if by going to this model if we have a reduc- tion in revenue from the justice court system then there is a reduction in the sheriff’s budget numbers. We have been giving them an additional 100 hours a week then those additional hours go down a little bit. It is a direct cause and effect,” Russell said. “It is an ex- periment the city of Irrigon wants to try for a while. I don’t want to go away from the contract model, but if one of our cities wants to contract for additional (sheriff) services we should have a number on what that is,” he added. Matlack urged the com- missioners that if they were going to discontinue giving sheriff coverage to decide now while his department was down two patrol offi- cers so he could cut back now and not have to lay anyone off. He said the commissioners had until June, when cities make up their budgets and the new contracts are renewed, in which to make a final de- cision.
