Morrow County School
Superintendent Dirk Dirk-
sen told the school board at
their Monday night meeting
at Riverside High School
in Boardman it would be
advisable to put off a bond
measure to fund school
building remodels and con-
struction considering the
current COVID-19 pan-
demic. “Now is not the
right time,” he said, adding
“Talking about the bond
numbers would not be pos-
itive as we move forward,”
citing “financial stress.”
“It’s still in the queue, but
it’s not the right time,” com-
mented board Chair Becky
Kindle.
The board approved
moving action on the bond
issue to a “future date.”
Dirksen suggested to the
board that the district con-
tinue to work to put the
bond together and put it
up to the voters in the May
2022 election.
Dirksen reported to the
board, concerning current
COVID-19 data, the dis-
trict is in “Safe Harbor”
until January 4, adding
the current number of cas-
es is “higher than we’ve
been for a while.” Howev-
er, he said there was “no
school spread.” “We’ve
had COVID in the schools”
but “not spread within the
schools.” He said the dis-
trict is hoping to extend
Safe Harbor but anticipates
the possibility of a “critical
change from what we are
doing at the present time.”
Dirksen said they hope
to restart the sports pro-
grams with a Feb. 8 football
practice, with other fall
sports tentatively beginning
Feb. 22; season two with
baseball, softball, tennis
and track to begin April 5;
winter sports, swimming,
basketball and wrestling,
to begin in May. “There are
a lot of changes coming,”
cautioned Dirksen.
