MATLACK
-Continued from PAGE ONE
friends, to keep our cit-
izens and visitors safe. This
has been a challenge on all
of us and very tragic for
those who have lost loved
ones or their livelihoods.
The COVID-19 virus is
real, and we want everyone
to be safe. The news of a
soon-to-be-released vac-
cine(s) is wonderful. You
have a county staff that has
been working diligently to
help keep you safe and in-
formed. We will continue to
educate the public on safety
information, recommenda-
tions and guidelines. The
safety recommendations of
wash your hands, social dis-
tance and wear a mask are
important for everyone’s
safety.
Sheriff Ken Matlack
Brown urges Orego-
nians to report each other
to police
After ordering the new
rules, Brown said residents
who know their neighbors
are violating the COVID-19
rules, which includes cap-
ping the number of people
allowed in your home at
six, should call the police.
“This is no different than
remaining tags in their Morrow County Foster Children Gift
Drive. Those wishing to participate should stop by Les Schwab,
pick up a tag, purchase the gifts and return them unwrapped
to Les Schwab with the tag attached by December 9.
what happens if there’s
a party down the street
and it’s keeping everyone
awake,” Brown said at a
recent news conference.
“What do neighbors do in
that case? They call law
enforcement because it’s
too noisy. This is just like
that. It’s like a violation of a
noise ordinance,” she said.
Despite what Sheriff
Matlack has said, a state-
ment from Brown’s office
said that Oregon State Po-
lice would be “working with
local law enforcement” to
enforce the new order, “in
the same way local law en-
forcement officers respond
to noise complaints for loud
parties, for example, and
issue citations.”
If a COVID violation
is cited criminally, under
Oregon statutes concerning
emergencies, it is consid-
ered a class C misdemeanor
— punishable by up to 30
days in jail, a fine of up to
$1,250, or both. A prose-
cutor can opt to reduce the
citation down to a class
A violation, which has a
lower fine. If a violation
is pursued by the Oregon
Health Authority it is a civil
penalty, and the statutory
maximum is $500 a day per
violation.
