CARD OF THANKS
My (Merry Chandler) life changed on Tuesday, Janu-
ary 14. While I was sleeping I had an ischemic stroke.
I was disoriented, no speech, pain continually with
headaches, pressure, dizziness, nausea, eyes and ears.
Grasping the idea of the difficulty to relearn my whole
life over again. Then I was misdiagnosed with epilep-
tic seizures. Five different horrible medications for
months, to learn not to prevent seizures, but that made
me sick and felt like a nightmare. I wish a doctor would
open my head, see the “Blue Light Special.”
After many conversations with different doctors, I am
suffering from the world’s worst of severe anxiety at-
tacks and NOT seizures. We are currently in the right
direction with “Mind Matters” to help and give me
plans with the severe social anxiety to reintroduce my-
self to a new version of Merry. I begin the end of Octo-
ber virtually (due to the virus).
Individuals make my situation a worthy, huge and great
team together, giving your dedication, kindness and pre-
cious time for my well-being. Thank you for everyone
who is continually working so hard. You are all my he-
roes: from the Pioneer Memorial Hospital doctors and
staff and Pioneer Memorial Clinic, Ambulance crew,
Kadlec Hospital, Life Flight, OHSU, Pioneer memori-
al Therapy, Tim Dickenson, Chiropractor, Kaley Pat-
terson’s gentle hands and secret source, thank you. My
dearest babysitters, “GO Fund” from my other child,
Kacie Gray, Bank of Eastern Oregon, and so many peo-
ple who have given from your hearts, Emma Osmin and
Bev Jensen with BEO, the Heppner Elks supporting the
dinner, a benefit dinner with many volunteers, a supply
of auction items donated, so many supporters attending
and showing Shawn that the rooms were full of genuine
love. To the Morrow County Grain Growers donating a
barbecue, Alita Nelson for selling tickets and the win-
ner Kaley Patterson, Petra Payne and followers from St.
Patrick’s Church for yard care with a blessing, all the
prayers for hearing, flowers, gifts, literally hundreds of
cards, basket of notes, cards and gifts collected at Mur-
ray’s Drug Store, to all the people walking or driving by
my house, waving shouting out “Miss you. I love you,”
and understanding and respecting my space. I can never
let you really know how much I appreciate you all.
Present update: as of January 14, I am a non-smoker,
nor a drinker. This was the only blessing. Staying posi-
tive, open minded and patient through each good or bad
day, I am learning new ways to reach my goal to de-
feat my severe anxiety in hopes to be my bubbly, crazy,
loud, social self and accept being a stroke victim.
I’m missing my work family at Murray’s Drug Store.
John and Ann are good to me, Stephanie is a savior,
Jodi, Aileen, Susan, Shelly, Clint, Shannon, Jennifer
S., Jennifer P., Deb, Hannah, Madison, Debbie and my
good buddy Kevin are loving me for me . . . I hope.
I hope to be included with you in due time, walking
through your door with my free spirited personality in
my flip flops. Recovery is not easy, but I get strength
from this community to help push me.
My family, a unique lineage, magical and inspirational.
I am so grateful to be born into this family of Bob and
Aloha DeSpain that led me to others that I would gain
an extensive, continually growing family. This family
has never given up on me through ups and downs. I
trust their judgement for care. We discuss the next jour-
ney and we all take the unknown path. This team works
in every which way. My niece, Mickie gave me a beau-
tiful wiring describing this family. “In this family, we
do second chances. We do grace. We do real. We do
prayers. We do mistakes. We do I’m sorrys. We do loud
really well. We do hugs. We do family. We do love, and
that do make it nice.” Thank you to my amazing hus-
band Shawn with unconditional love and support, ev-
ery day, every hour, every second. Our love is our life;
our life is our love. To my kids, Drew and Tayllor, they
are the glue that makes it together, for updating family,
friends and community, the errands, meals, phone calls,
doctor appointments and taking care of me. Thank
you for taking time away from your jobs and especial-
ly from your family time. I so appreciate my children
for whom they have become and represent beautiful
inner souls. My beautiful daughter Brandi, my broth-
er, Chris and wife Kathy, my niece/sister, Arwen, my
Mom, Debbie for coming home to bring groceries, cook
meals, take care of me and spending time together. I
miss you! To my baby Caige Jack, you are the strongest
in this family. You have seen and heard. You listened
and learned how to take care of your Momma. You’ve
been watching me and waiting on me. You hug and cud-
dle. You are so brave. I’m so proud of you son. There
is never enough from my heart to lead you to believe I
am sincerely grateful and appreciative. To the families
of Kellie Gray, Kirsten Harrison, Alita Nelson, Arletha
Brannon and Angie Hanson, my heart is so full of love.
I think of you every day, for what you have given me is
the person I am presently. Thank you for loving me. I
love you a bushel and a peck.
To MCGG, the underlining which helps Shawn take
care of me. You keep Shawn’s family surviving. With
thoughts and feelings and a teary eye often, I personally
“Thank You !” You have been so good in many ways.
You have been understanding every day due the unpre-
dictability of my life. Thank you from the entire Shawn
Chandler families and believing that family matters.
Today I can tell you I have worked hared to get where
I am. Pioneer Memorial Therapy has special people
to get me healthy. I get new chores as I gain strength.
I’ve conquered eating, drinking water, resting, talking,
walking, physical therapy homework, speech home-
work and daily home chores. Current new chores, walk-
ing one-two times, riding a bike, Shelley’s new exercis-
es, making a phone call and visiting local businesses.
What does Merry want? What makes Merry happy? Sit-
ting on the porch, spending time with my children and
grandchildren, visits from family and friends. There is
no “normal” to get back to where I was. I believe I will
keep fighting to show you my results of recovery. I am
myself, with a touch reborn. I’m a stroke survivor . .

eased
Public use restrictions
(PURs) on the Umatilla
National Forest dropped
to Phase A on Friday, Oct.
9, 2020.
Phase A is the first level
of restrictions, generally
implemented when the fire
danger is moderate to high.
PURS are phased in collec-
tively, as conditions war-
rant, and may differ from
forest to forest. Restrictions
under Phase A include:
-Chainsaws may be
operated only between the
hours of 8 p.m. and 1 p.m.
local time. A one-hour fire
watch is required after saw
operations cease. Saw op-
erators are required to have
an axe (minimum 2 lb.
head, 26” length), shovel
(8” wide, 26” length), and
fire extinguisher (minimum
ABC 8 oz.) in their posses-
sion.
-Smoking is allowed
only in enclosed vehicles,
buildings or cleared areas.
-No off-road/off-trail
vehicle travel or travel on
roads not cleared of stand-
ing grass or other flamma-
ble material; no vehicle
travel on those FS roads
where access has been im-
peded or blocked by earthen
berm, logs, boulders, barri-
er, barricade or gate, or as
otherwise identified in the
Fire Order.
The public is also en-
couraged to practice safe
campfire principles when
recreating in dispersed and
developed campsites. For-
est officials recommend the
following campfire safety
precautions:
-Campfires should be in
fire pits surrounded by dirt,
rock or commercial rings
and in areas not conducive
to rapid fire spread. All
flammable material shall be
cleared within a three-foot
