New minister and family make Heppner their home
Pastor Quentin Byers
has taken the associate min-
ister position at the Heppner
Christian Church where
he will learn the ropes in
preparation for taking over
as head pastor when Pastor
Ray DeLoe retires. Pastor
Quentin, his wife Ashton
and two daughters, Kyla
and Alba recently moved
to Heppner from Boise, ID.
Pastor Quentin and
Ashton were both raised in
Wallowa County and were
high school sweethearts.
They attended community
college in Salem where
Pastor Quentin received a
certificate in welding and
Ashton obtained her dental
assisting certificate.
In 2010 the Byers fam-
ily was devastated by the
loss of Pastor Quentin’s
younger brother to suicide.
The loss made him decide
he wanted to minister to
hurting people, so in 2013
he heeded the call which
took him to Boise Bible
College where he received a
Bachelor of Science degree
in ministry and Associate
of Science in church lead-
ership. The call to ministry
has been a part of the Byers
family for many years. Pas-
tor Quentin’s grandfather,
Melvert Byers Sr. was a
missionary and minister.
His father, Melvert Byers
Jr. has been ministering at

for thirty-one years.
Immediately after Pas-
tor Quentin graduated from
BBC, he accepted a head
minister position in down-
town Boise. Pastor Quentin
and Ashton said, “We were
surprised that God had led
us to a ministry in Boise
as it had always been our
intent to return to a rural
community to raise our
children.” They continued,
“God had greater plans for
the Byers family and we all
grew from our time living
in Boise.”
In the move from
Boise to Heppner, there
wasn’t enough room to
bring everything so Kyla
and Alba had to leave their
bikes behind. The young
entrepreneurs decided to
take matters into their own
hands to earn the money to
buy themselves new bikes.
With that in mind, the girls
set up a lemonade stand for
three days over the 4 th of
July weekend.
With the help of the
Heppner community, Kyla
and Alba were able to earn
over $200 from their ef-
forts. The family set off to

available in Hermiston.
After making phone calls,
bikes were located in Ken-
newick, WA so the family
loaded up the pickup and
drove to Kennewick to see
if they could find bikes the
correct size for the girls.
Although options were lim-
ited, both girls were able to
find their perfect bike.
Kyla and Alba wanted
to tell the Heppner com-
munity, “Thank you for
all your support and the
encouragement you gave us
as we worked our lemonade
stand. We couldn’t have
gotten our bikes without
you.”
