Nancy has planted six
trees including Japanese
maple, cherry, Crape Myr-
tle and “October Glory”
maple, along with plantings
of peonies, garden phlox,
creeping phlox, lilacs and
barberry. Annuals in con-
tainers and hanging baskets
brighten every nook and
cranny.
The narrow side yard
was cleared of crabgrass,
then mulched with bark,

down. Fencing, a metal
gate and arch now deter
deer from jumping into the
backyard. Local yardman,
Richard Fish, takes care
of the mowing and weed
control.

toes in containers.
Originally from Mis-
souri, Nancy has also lived
in Colorado, Virginia, Con-
necticut, Texas, California
and Oregon. Marriage to
the late John Gochnauer in
2001 brought her to Hep-
pner where the two ran their
four businesses. For the
past five years, she has been
the apartment manager for
St. Patrick’s Apartments
and also works part-time
as a checker for Heppner
Market Fresh.
As a young girl, Nancy
helped put up fruit from
the orchard of her maternal
grandmother who also had
a green thumb with flowers.
Nancy smiles to think how
proud grandmother would
be of the full row of irises
growing in Nancy’s front
flower bed.
For those starting out,
Nancy recommends pa-
tience and perseverance.
She continues to make
plans for the future by add-
ing more trees, planting
vines on the cyclone fence
and continuing to make her
yard “a place I want to be.”
Yard of the Month is
co-sponsored by the Hep-
pner Volunteers, MCGG/
Green Feed Store and the
city of Heppner.
