for the May 19 primary
election will begin to go
out Wednesday, Apr. 29
and should start to arrive in
mailboxes around May 4.
The last day to register
to vote or change party
affiliation in the upcoming
election was Tuesday, Apr.
28.
Remember, ballots are
not forwarded. Those who
don’t receive ballots, but

Due to Oregon Legislature
approving a bill codifying
paid postage for ballots in
June 2019, ballot return
envelopes will include pre-
paid postage for business
reply mail. Mailed ballots
should be mailed no lat-
er than May 12 to allow
enough time to arrive by
May 19.
For voter convenience,
24-hour drop boxes are lo-
cated throughout the coun-
ty. All drop boxes close
at 8 p.m. on election day.

What, if any, prior ex-
perience, do you have?
There are no formal
classes that you can take to
be a judge. Even law school
does not prepare you for the
position. There is a lot of
procedure and decorum in
a courtroom along eviden-
tiary rules and writs. Some
come before the bench
accidentally, some willful-
ly. What is the role of the
judge? To deter, rehab, heal
or to incarcerate and pro-
tect. Are these actions that
come before us character
flaws, addiction, despera-
tion, disability or a com-
bination thereof? Judges
have a unique opportunity
to modify behavior, reduce
recidivism and encourage
lawful behaviors. In Pla-
tos Republic, he speaks
of the four virtues of a
“Good City,” wise, brave,
temperate and just. I have
that experience. I live that
