Ballots go out this week HEPPNER G T 50¢ azette imes VOL. 139 NO. 18 10 Pages Wednesday, April 29, 2020 Morrow County, Heppner, Oregon Morrow County Clerk Bobbi Childers says ballots for the May 19 primary election will begin to go out Wednesday, Apr. 29 and should start to arrive in mailboxes around May 4. The last day to register to vote or change party affiliation in the upcoming election was Tuesday, Apr. 28. Remember, ballots are not forwarded. Those who don’t receive ballots, but believe they should have, should contact the Morrow County Clerk’s office at 541-676-5604. All ballots are due by 8 p.m. on Election Day, Tuesday, May 19. Ballots must be received, not sim- ply postmarked, on that day. Due to Oregon Legislature approving a bill codifying paid postage for ballots in June 2019, ballot return envelopes will include pre- paid postage for business reply mail. Mailed ballots should be mailed no lat- er than May 12 to allow enough time to arrive by May 19. For voter convenience, 24-hour drop boxes are lo- cated throughout the coun- ty. To help with the decision process, the Heppner G-T asked the candidates in these contested races to tell us a little more about County Justice of the themselves. Even law school does not prepare you for the position. There is a lot of procedure and decorum in a courtroom along eviden- tiary rules and writs. Some come before the bench accidentally, some willful- ly. What is the role of the judge? To deter, rehab, heal or to incarcerate and pro- tect. Are these actions that come before us character flaws, addiction, despera- tion, disability or a com- bination thereof? Judges have a unique opportunity to modify behavior, reduce recidivism and encourage lawful behaviors.
