GT will not publish unsigned letters. All letters MUST include the author’s address and phone
number for use by the GT office. The GT reserves the right to edit letters. The GT is not
responsible for accuracy of statements made in letters. Any letters expressing thanks will
be placed in the classifieds under “Card of Thanks” at a cost of $10.
Wrestlers compete at Grant Union
On Friday, all Mustang
wrestlers traveled to John
Day to compete in the annu-
al Grant Union tournament,
which hosts teams from
throughout eastern Oregon
in both middle school and
high school.
The Heppner middle
school team was competing
in their third tournament of
the season. The wrestlers,
composed of sixth through
eighth graders, have a mix
of veterans and novices
contending at multiple
weight classes.
The athletes battling on
Friday were Keegin Chit-
ty, the lone eighth grader;
Jaime Cavan, Carson An-
gell and Zachery Brown,
seventh graders; Chris
Humphrey, Angel Myers,
David Asbridge, Raymond
Sorensen, Brady Williams
and David George, sixth
graders, all performing
with grit and determination.

wrestlers compete at GU
to competing in the Geogra-
phy Bee and the Chess Club
qualifier.
According to the
press release, the group all
learned valuable lessons for
their future in wrestling and
life in general. The middle
school athletes faced off
against teams from Crane,
Pine Eagle, Union, Burns,
Baker, Enterprise and many
more. The next action for
these young wrestlers will
be at La Grande on Wednes-
day.
The high school team
competed against nine
teams from throughout
eastern Oregon including
Baker, Burns, Grant Union,
Echo, Enterprise, Union,
Crane and Pine Eagle. The
athletes representing Hep-
pner were Roen Waite (106
pounds), Bryan Collins
(113 pounds), Saul Lopez
(126 pounds), Edward Ells-
worth (145 pounds), Conor
Brosnan (152 pounds), Jace
Coe (160 pounds) and Su-
zanneah Cason (115-125
pound) wrestling in the
women’s division.

The day was filled
with many quality match-
es against top rated talent
from multiple schools with
both victories and defeats.
Waite would end the day
with a victory over a Crane
opponent and two defeats
to wrestlers from Baker and
Union. Bryan went two for
two on the day with victo-
ries over two competitors,
both from Baker. Lopez
completed the tournament
with a win over a wrestler
from Crane and a defeat
against a fine athlete from
Baker.
Edward won a tough
battle against Echo and then
lost a tight match against
Pine Eagle. Brosnan went
zero for three on the day
with losses to three state
ranked wrestlers from Bak-
er, Burns and Grant Union.
Jace Coe had two tough
matches with a victory over
a wrestler from Baker and
a defeat to a state ranked
wrestler from Burns. Ca-
son, in the women’s divi-
sion, had an outstanding
day. She had three victories
over wrestlers from Baker
and two wrestlers from
Grant Union.
The next time the Hep-
pner Mustangs take the
match will be in Heppner at
the Bank of Eastern Oregon
Invitational. The wrestling
begins at 10 a.m. and will
include seventeen teams
from throughout eastern
Oregon, including 5A to
1A schools. The team in-
vites everyone to come to
the gym on Saturday and
support the Mustangs.

St. Patrick’s Parish vol-
unteers will serve lunch on
Wednesday, February 5 at
St. Patrick’s Senior Center.
Lunch will be sweet and
sour chicken, white rice,
pumpkin bread, asparagus
and peaches.
Milk, coffee and tea is
served at each meal. Sug-
gested donation is $3.50
per meal. Menu is subject
to change.
