The Ione Topic Club
completed its 91 st year of
service to the Ione commu-
nity by enjoying the club
tradition of a Christmas
lunch. The club was found-
ed in 1928 by local women
living on farms in the area
with the goal of furthering
education for their mem-
bers and the community.
The club continues to
fulfill the same goals today.
Recently they sponsored
the Ione school Scholas-
tic Book Fair, which not
only provides families an
opportunity to purchase
reasonably priced books but
adds hundreds of books to
classrooms and the school
library each year. Profits
from the book fair have
been used to support the
Creative Care Preschool
and assist with bringing
speakers and programs to
Ione Community School.
The group continues
to hold a mother-daugh-
ter lunch each spring to
recognize the educational
achievements of graduating
seniors.
The Topic Club es-
tablished the Ione library
in 1933 and was the sole
support until 2013 when
it became a taxing district.
They continue to support
the library by providing
readers for preschool visits
and assist by volunteering
during the annual summer
reading program.
The club fulfills their
goal of continued education
by sponsoring trips to local
points of interest. Recently
they toured the Port of Mor-
row and learned about the
great contribution it brings
to the county.
pounds. Roen advanced to
the semifinals on Saturday
with byes in the first day
of competition. He would
end Saturday with a third-
place medal after a loss to
a wrestler from Culver and
a victory, by fall, against
Lawson Setzer from San-
tiam Christian. Suzanneah
ended the tournament going
0 for 2, losing to wrestlers
from Elgin and Santiam
Christian.
Edward’s tournament
ended on Friday with two
losses and one win by fall
over Brant Jones from San-
tiam Christian. Conor had
a bye in the first round and
then won by pin over Trevor
Smith from Culver, advanc-
ing him to the semifinals on
Saturday. Jace would have
two wins on Friday. He won
by fall over Harley Miller
from Joseph and a technical
fall over Aidan Henlin from
Culver, which advanced
Coe to the semifinals on
Saturday where he would
face his teammate, Conor.
Saturday started off
with Coe and Brosnan
squaring off in the semifinal
round of the championship
bracket. The match was a
hard-fought battle ending
with Jace scoring an escape
with 15 seconds remaining
in the third round to give
him the victory with a score
of 5 to 4.
Brosnan dropped to
the consolation semifinals
and wrestled Logan Griffin
from Adrian. He won the
victory with a fall in the
second round. He would
next wrestle Trevor Oxen-
rider of Santiam Christian
in the consolation finals
for 3 rd place. Conor pinned
Trevor in the second round
to secure a third-place med-
al.
Jace, with a victory
over Brosnan, advanced to
the finals versus the 2A, #1
ranked 160-pound wres-
tler, Hunter Augustynovich
from Culver. The match
was a tough fought contest
with the lead changing mul-
tiple times over the three
rounds. The third round saw
Coe take the lead but then
Augustynovich reversed
Coe and put him on his
back to get the fall. Jace
ended the tournament with
a second-place medal.
The Mustang’s will be
in major action next in Echo
on Saturday when fourteen
teams are scheduled to
compete. Wrestling will
start at 10 a.m. Everyone
is encouraged to come and
support the Mustang wres-
tlers.
