Mustangs begin basketball season
With only two days of
practice after coming off
of their state championship
football season, the Hep-
pner Mustang boys’ basket-
ball team started their hoop
season with three home
games last week. Other
teams that didn’t go deep
into the football playoffs
have been practicing for
over two weeks to get ready
for the start of the basket-
ball season. Even without
the extra practice time, the
Heppner Mustang varsity
team shook off some of the
rust from not being in bas-
ketball shape or spending
much time in the gym and
went 2-1 for the week. They
lost their first game of the
season on Wednesday night
against the Umatilla Vi-
kings by the score of 52-43.
They then came back and
had a good weekend and
defeated the Dufur Rangers
54-47 and the Central Linn
Cobras 66-56.
Against the quick and
athletic Umatilla team,
Heppner fell behind early
after the first quarter 11-
6. They then outscored
the Vikings in the second
quarter to only trail 25-22
at halftime. It was a close
second half but the Vikings
outscored the Mustangs and
won the game 52-43.
Mason Lehman led the
team with 14 points, six
rebounds and an assist.
Gavin Hanna-Robinson had
a double-double with 12
points and 12 rebounds. He
also dished out three assists.
Kellen Grant finished with
four points, seven rebounds,
one assist and one steal in
the game. Jayden Wilson
also scored four points and
he also had five rebounds,
blocked a shot and had
a steal. Casey Fletcher,
Kannon Wilkins and Roy
Collins each scored three
points for the Mustangs.
Collins also hauled down
four rebounds, had a steal
and blocked a shot. Jackson
Lehman recorded three re-
bounds and had two assists
before fouling out of the
game.
In the game against
Dufur, the Mustangs took
a 12-11 lead after the first
quarter and led at the half
29-23. Heppner outscored
the Rangers 10-8 in the
third quarter but Dufur won
the fourth 16-15. The Mus-
tangs held on and got the
win by the score of 54-47.
Once again Mason
Lehman led the team in
scoring with 18. He also
had a rebound, an assist
and two steals. Wilson had
an outstanding game with
his first double-double of
his varsity career as he
finished with 14 points and
15 rebounds. He also had
an assist and a steal in the
game. Jackson Lehman
bounced back to score 11
points, grab five rebounds,
have three assists and three
steals. Hanna-Robinson
scored four points, had five
rebounds, one assist and
two steals for the Mustangs.
Collins had four points
and a rebound while Grant
scored two points, hauled
down five rebounds, had
two assists, one steal and
blocked a shot. Fletcher
scored one point but ripped
down six rebounds on the
night. Joe Sherman had
three rebounds and an as-
sist while Wilkins had one
rebound and one assist for
the team.
The Central Linn
Cobras were on their
way home from beating
Weston-McEwen on Friday
night and stopped in to play
the Mustangs on Saturday.
A close first quarter saw
the Mustangs take the lead
12-11. Central Linn had a
big second quarter and out-
scored the Mustangs 16-11
to lead at halftime 27-23.
Heppner jumped all over
the visitors from the valley
in the third quarter and re-
ally got things rolling offen-
sively. Heppner scored 28
points in the quarter, many
off of easy baskets when
they turned up the defensive
pressure and got lots of
steals. Central Linn could
only score 14 points in the
third and then both teams
finished with 15 points in
the fourth quarter. Heppner
Jayden Wilson shoots for the basket at the game played vs
Central Linn.
Kennisyn Wilkins takes the shot during the Lady Mustangs
game vs Dufur on Friday, December 6. Final score was 47-
got the big early season win ed four rebounds and a 29.
by the score of 66-56.
Joe Sherman led the
Mustangs in scoring with
14. He also had five re-
bounds, one assist and one
steal in the game. Mason
Lehman had 12 points,
three rebounds, an assist
and two steals for the Mus-
tangs. Wilson nearly re-
corded another early season
double-double as he had 12
points and eight rebounds
to go along with five steals
in the game. Fletcher hus-
tled for eight points, three
rebounds, one assist and
a steal. Hanna-Robinson
and Wilkins each scored
seven points in the game.
Hanna-Robinson also had
one rebound, three steals
and blocked a shot while
Wilkins also contribut-
steal. Jackson Lehman had
another good all-around
game with six points, three
rebounds, two assist, two
steals and blocked two
shots. Jorden Sweeney
played well and had two
rebounds and one assist.
Grant and Collins both had
three rebounds in the game
for the Mustangs.
The Heppner JV team
also went 2-1 for the week
as they lost to Umatilla, but
then bounced back to easily
defeat Dufur and Central
Linn.
This weekend both
teams travel to Portland to
play the Portland Christian
Royals on Friday night.
They then stop in Dufur on
their way home Saturday to
play the Rangers.
