Heifer project encourages dairy interest
Threemile Canyon Farms
Dairy and Morrow County
Extension have partnered to
create a one-of-a-kind ‘Heifer
Project’ Program to encourage
more dairy cow participation
and interest at our county fair.
Youth, in both 4-H and
FFA, had the opportunity to get
involved in raising and show-
ing dairy heifers without a
large amount of financial input.
Youth apply, complete an inter-
view and follow the guidelines
for the project and Threemile
Canyon Farms provided the
heifer with the intent that the
animal will be returned to the
dairy to be bred for production.
Eight students and their
parents interviewed this past
December for the opportunity
to be a part of this pilot project.
They received a 6-month-old
jersey heifer calf and some
supplies to get started. Heif-
ers are required to follow the
strict diet plan developed by
the animal nutritionists at the
dairy and youth must bring
their heifers back to the dairy
every two months for a weigh
and vet check.
Stop by the beef barn at
fair and say hello to these
lovely ladies and visit with
the families that worked to
help get this program off the
ground.
