Heppner man wins TV in drawing Morrow SWCD to purge Myrtle spurge The Morrow Soil and Water Conservation Dis- trict (SWCD) was recently awarded grants from the Wildhorse Foundation and the Howard and Beth Bry- ant Foundation to locate and remove Myrtle spurge from the Heppner area. A native of Europe and Asia, Myrtle spurge was first introduced as an orna- mental plant for gardens. Its tolerance to drought, tightly clustered leaves and attractive blue-green color made it a favorite for land- scaping. But this evergreen perennial is not as friendly as it appears. Myrtle spurge contains a toxic, milky sap that can cause severe skin irritation and blistering. For some in- dividuals, the sap can cause a severe allergic reaction, possibly leading to more se- rious symptoms. Now con- sidered an invasive noxious weed by the Oregon State Weed Board, the spurge has escaped yards and gardens posters throughout Heppner to help locals identify the plant and provide informa- tion. Any questions or con- cerns about Myrtle spurge can be directed to Jared Huddleston of the Morrow SWCD at 541-676-5452, ext. 101. For more informa- tion on Myrtle spurge visit the SWCD website at www. and has spread to other morrowswcd.org. yards and gardens around town.
