    Wheels with Meals
program begins
Coming this summer to
Heppner, Lexington, Board-
man and Irrigon is “Wheels
with Meals,” sponsored by
the Morrow County School
District (MCSD). The Sum-
mer Food Service Program
for the MCSD is expand-
ing with two new mobile
buses named “Wheels with
Meals”, with the slogan
Feed a Smile, that will be
going to eight new Summer
Food Service Program sites
this summer. Three buses
were donated by Mid-Co-
lumbia bus company and
retrofitted for food service.
Two of the buses will be
put into service this school
year. This project has been
a community effort along
with grants and support.
For the name of the
bus and slogan, there was
district wide contest for stu-
dents to submit their ideas
and graphics. Three class-
es had winners including
Cynthia Hodgdon’s class at
Irrigon Elementary with the
theme name “Wheels with
Meals,” Jon Schade’s class
at Riverside Jr/Sr High with
student Levi Whitmer’s
slogan “Feed a Smile,”
and Hilaree Vanderpas’s
class, also at Riverside
Jr/Sr High with students
Luis Cardenas and April
Mendieta’s fruit, vegetables
and entrée graphics. The
winners received a healthy
pizza party in the classroom
as a reward, sponsored by
Sodexo.
The Summer Food
Service Program provides
free meals to any child
ages 1-18. One bus will
be going to five new sites
in Boardman and Irrigon
and another bus will serve
meals at three new sites in
Heppner and Lexington.
Lunch meals will begin
on June 17 and plan to run
through August 16. Sum-
mer school sites will also be
running at different times
throughout the summer in
addition to the “Wheels
with Meals.” Times and
locations are subject to
change but are updated on

Juanita Mary Proc-
tor and Magaret Frances
Bunten Pieper celebrated
their 90 th birthday in May at
the Parish Hall of Our Lady
of Angels Catholic Church
in Hermiston. Known as the
Hale twins, they were born
to Vier and Mary Hale and
grew up on the McDon-
ald Canyon ranch between
Heppner and Pilot Rock
owned by their grandpar-
ents, Phil and Mary Hirl.
After attending the lo-
cal one-room schoolhouse,
they moved into Heppner,
graduating from Heppner
High School in 1947.
Nita married Rocky
Proctor and raised their
family of five children on
a small ranch outside of
Irrigon. Married 61 years,
the couple enjoyed fam-
ily vacations traveling to
Canada and Mexico and
spending countless hours
riding horses and team
roping. Rocky passed away
in 2011 leaving a legacy
of 11 grandchildren, 17
great-grandchildren and 1
great-great-grandchild.
Margaret was married
to Bill Bunten until his
sudden death in 1965. They
raised six children on a
small farm in Hermiston
where West Winds Nurs-
ery stands now. Later, she
married Arnie Pieper who
introduced dirt bikes and
motorcycles to the family.
After Arnie’s death in 1982,
Margaret has enjoyed bingo
and traveling to visit her
15 grandchildren and 21
great-grandchildren.
The Hale twins now
reside at Avamere Center
in Hermiston, each in their
own apartments and see
each other daily for meals
and reminiscing. They look
forward to celebrating their
100 th birthday party.
