Local woman
graduates from
medical school
Pictured (L-R): Brian Thompson, Emily Thompson Jack,
Keenan Jack, Susie Thompson and Stephen Thompson.
Local woman Emily
(Thompson) Jack recently
graduated from Oregon
Health Science University
with a degree in family
medicine. Dr. Jack, 27,
graduated from Heppner
High School in 2010 and
from Oregon State Univer-
sity in 2014 before receiv-
ing her medical degree at
OHSU. Graduation services
were Monday, June 3. She
is the daughter of Brian
and Susan Thompson of
Heppner, and her husband’s
name is Keenan.
Dr. Jack said she is ex-
cited about finishing school
and eager to start her res-
idency and start seeing
patients. She will be do-
ing her residency in Boise
for three years, and then
coming back to practice in
Oregon. Her specialty is
family medicine and she is
in a program which pays
her entire schooling costs if
she practices in a rural area
of Oregon for five years.
Right now she does not
know where in Oregon that
will be. “I’m very excited
and can’t believe people
are going to be calling me
doctor,” she says. “After
all these years of schooling
and all the people I have
met, I am so thankful for
the support the Heppner
community and my parents
have given me.”
Dr. Jack also recently
returned from an interest-
ing trip abroad where she
spent 11 days in Japan as
an OHSU exchange student
observing and studying ru-
ral medicine in that country.
“OHSU chose me to repre-
sent them in this exchange,”
she said, explaining how
she traveled to rural areas
with Japanese doctors while
they treated their patients.
While in Japan she also
went to the city of Kyoto
and attended a primary
care conference where she
spoke to the association
members. She also visited
with students at Miyazaki
University and discussed
rural primary care.
Summer reading
begins at library
Zandra Masterson, a seventh grader, competed in the playday.
St. Pat’s plans VBS
The St. Patrick Parish
will hold vacation bible
school “A Radical Ride on
the Wings of Prayer” at the
parish hall from Monday,
June 10, through Thursday,
June 14, from 8:45 to noon.
Kids in kindergarten
through sixth grade are in-
vited to attend the VBS and
anyone older may come and
help the leaders.
The week will include
songs, crafts and snacks.
Children will come to bet-
ter understand the power
of prayer and how to put
it into action in their daily
lives. “We want this to be
a whole family experience,
so we invite parents to at-
tend any of the VBS days,”
said Kathy Cutsforth, VBS
director.
On Thursday, the VBS
will have a special celebra-
tion and swimming at the
Heppner pool. Parents and
grandparents are invited to
attend and participate with
the children.
There is no charge for
attending. For more infor-
mation, call Kathy, 541-
980-2352.
The summer reading
program, “A Universe of
Stories,” will get underway
at the Heppner branch of the
Oregon Trail Library start-
ing with sign-up on June 7
at 11 a.m.
Prizes will be awarded
for reading.
“The benefits of sum-
mer reading programming
for children include:
-Children are motivat-
ed to read;
-Children develop posi-
tive attitudes about reading,
books and the library;
-Children maintain
their reading skills during
summer vacation;
-Children have access
to experiences that further
their sense of discover;
-Children have access
to experiences through
which they can learn to
work in cooperation,” says
an OTLD spokesperson.
Some weeks there will
be time to work on STEM
(Science, Technology, En-
gineering and Math) proj-
ects with wind.
The next teen night will
be June 13 at 6 p.m. Teens
will be able to explore rec-
ipes that they can cook in
the microwave.
Books for June include
James Patterson, “18 th Ab-
duction”, Jennifer Chiaver-
ini, “Resistance Women,”
and Diane C. McPhail,
“The Abolitionist’s Daugh-
ter.”
