Animal rescue
transports feral cats
The MDH animal res-
cue in Heppner transported
nine feral cats to a clinic lo-
cated in Benton City, WA on
May 16. The clinic, Prevent
Homeless Pets (PHP), was
responsible for performing
the low cost spay and neuter
for the cats.
After a 24-hour recov-
ery from surgery, the cats
were returned to their ad-
opted home, where they
will continue to live and be
cared for.
The group has planned
another appointment for
spay and neuter on May
30, with transport leaving at
6:30 a.m. Those with feral
(wild) cats who would like
to have them included in the
next appointment should
contact MDH at 541-676-
9000. MDH will provide
assistance trapping the cats
if necessary.
Reduced cost spay and
neuter is available for pets
as well by calling PHP at
509-497-1133 or by visiting
their website at preventh-
omelesspets.org.
Those interested in
volunteering with MDH
animal rescue should con-
tact April Herzog at 541-
676-9000. Volunteers are
needed to foster, donate or
contribute computer skills
for this community endeav-
or. Everyone is welcome to
participate.

Students will start
working this fall when
school is back in session.
Jobs are available for a se-
mester or the entire school
year. Students will work
an average of 10 hours per
week.
The purpose of the in-
ternships are to introduce
high school students to jobs
and careers that are already
located in Morrow County.
Students will benefit by
earning income, while lo-
cal businesses can utilize
local employees. “This is
what we have been trying
to do for years with Career
Technical Education (CTE)
-- teaching kids how to get
a job, work successfully in
a job and consider a career
here in their own commu-
nity,” said Dirk Dirksen,
superintendent of the Mor-
row County School District.
The students applied
for the jobs in April and
went through the inter-
viewing process on May
14 and 15.
