Track team, district champs
The boys track team, District Champions for the second year in a row.
The Heppner men’s
track team walked away
with a hard-earned dis-
trict championship at the
2A District 5 Champion-
ship meet on Friday, May
10. This year, the Wapati
district and the Columbia
Basin district combined,
creating a district stacked
with elite athletes. Heppner
athletes stepped up to the
challenge with the small
women’s team earning sev-
enth place.
The following mem-
bers of the track teams will
compete at state after qual-
ifying at district: Hunter
Nichols in the 800, 3000,
4x400m; Jayden Wilson in
400, 4x400; Mason Lehman
in 400, 4x400; Trent Smith
in 4x400; Leo Waite in the
300m hurdles; Derek How-
ard in shot-put and discus;
Trevor Antonucci in 1500
and Madelyn Nichols in
1500, 800.
At the district tourna-
ment the day started with
the field events at 11a.m.
with Derek Howard, Carson
Brosnan, and Conor Bros-
nan running between the
discus and the javelin. In
the javelin, Carson Brosnan
threw a personal record of
129’6” for seventh place
and Derek Howard threw
130’1” for sixth place. Der-
ek Howard took second
place with a discus throw
of 122’10’ and Conor Bros-
nan made the podium with
his throw of 9’63” which
earned him seventh place.
Conor Brosnan and Derek
Howard then joined Blake
Wolters at the shot-put
ring, and all three stood on
the podium. Brosnan took
eighth place with a throw
of 34’9.75”, Wolters took
seventh with a throw of
37’2” and Howard stood on
top with a first-place throw
of 50’0”.
The jumping squad
stepped up to earn some
unexpected points for the
team. Hailey Holmgren
took seventh place with a
jump of 12’9” and Jayden
Wilson, ranked eighth be-
fore the meet, took sixth
place with a jump of 18’8”.
Freshman Hannah Finch
jumped an impressive
31’3.5” in the triple jump,
earning third place behind
two senior jumpers from
Grant Union. Jackson Leh-
man took a risk jumping
from the 36-foot board to
move up to sixth place with
a jump of 37’7”, increasing
his personal best jump by
1.5 feet.
The running events
started with the 4x100 team
running for seventh place
and earning the team two
points. Madelyn Nichols
qualified for state in a re-
laxed 1500m run, placing
second overall. Trevor An-
tonucci pulled in front of
a competitive field in the
second half of the 1500m
run, earning first place and
pulling Trent Smith and
Jordan Sweeney to sixth
and seventh place. Brock
Hisler set a personal record
time of 12.67 in the 100m
dash, and Brian Collins
earned ninth place with a
solid run of 12.05. Han-
nah Finch earned seventh
place in the 100m dash by
running 13.73 and Julianna
Teeman came in 10 th with a
time of 14.62.
Marlee Mitchell ran
an impressive 400m dash,
earning fifth place with
a personal best time of
1:05.36. In the men’s race,
all three Heppner athletes
ran in the fastest heat and
earned three places on the
podium. Jackson Lehman
ran 57.17 for seventh place,
Mason Lehman ran a per-
sonal best time of 53.14
for third place, and Jayden
Wilson ran 52.23 for sec-
ond place. Mason Lehman
earned the wildcard place
for state with his time, so
both Wilson and Lehman
will compete at the state
competition.
Leo Waite stepped up
in the 110m hurdles earning
third place with a person-
al record time of 18.47,
and Austin Moses took
sixth place as well. Hai-
ley Holmgren also earned
eighth place in the women’s
100m hurdle race.
Next came the 800m
race. The 800 races start-
ed strong with Madelyn
Nichols breaking the Hep-
pner High School record
by a second with a run of
2:26.71. Lillian Imes also
placed in the 800m event,
earning seventh place.
Hunter Nichols, battling
sickness that earlier in the
week had him down with
a high fever, did his job
by winning the 800 in the
second lap. Jordan Sweeney
and Trent Smith also ran in
the loaded field, earning
ninth and 10 th places. The
200m races, always fast
and competitive, earned
Heppner extra points with
a well-earned fourth place
run for Jayden Wilson in
a time of 24.21. Bryan
Collins earned ninth place
with a personal record time
of 24.74, and Mason Leman
took 10 th . Hannah Finch,
Marlee Mitchell and Julian-
na Teeman ran strong races
in a tough field, earning
ninth, 10 th and 12 th places.
The 300m hurdle race,
always exciting to watch,
left three Heppner ath-
letes on the podium. Austin
Moses took eighth place;
Jackson Lehman took third
place with a personal best
time of 45.25 and Leo Waite
earned a place at state with
a second-place finish in
a personal record time of
44.41. Hunter Nichols,
struggling with exhaustion
and sickness, gutted out
a photo finish win in the
3000-meter run and then
turned around to do what he
could for the 4x400m relay.
The women’s team
started the relays with a sea-
son record time of 4:35.26.
The men’s team, filled with
nerves, stepped up to the
line. Trent Smith started
the race, pushing through
a painful hamstring to put
the Mustang’s in position
to win. Jayden Wilson took
the baton and put as much
distance as he could be-
tween him and the runner
behind him, handing it off
to Mason Lehman with a
solid lead. Lehman knew
that he had to push the
lead even larger, as the an-
chor, Hunter Nichols, was
still recovering from the
3000-meter run and hurting
from his previous sickness
and he would be racing the
winning 400m runner in the
district. Nichols took the
baton and with all the grit
he had, finished the race in
first with a time of 3:35.06,
tying their personal record
time from the Centennial
Invitational.
The men’s team end-
ed up taking the District
Championship for the sec-
ond year in a row. Tough
minds, bodies and team
spirit led the whole team
to perform at their best and
come together to celebrate.
Nichols was helped off the
podium and cared for by his
teammates, in a show of the
strength the Heppner Track
and Field team has.
