I have been in Heppner
for five and a half weeks,
helping my siblings and
my brother-in-law provide
end-of-life care for our
mother and mother-in-law,
Marie Meilan. During this
time, and even prior to this
interval, I have witnessed
some truly heartwarming
behavior in your commu-
nity. For example, shortly
after moving to Heppner
in May 2018, Mother was
readily accepted by the
residents and staff of Saint
Patrick’s Apartments, and
welcomed into the “ex-
tended family” that resides
there. Then, when she be-
came ill, the employees of
Pioneer Memorial Home
Health and Hospice were
extraordinarily attentive
and provided the very best
of care. In particular I’d
like to single out Caroline
Jackson for exhibiting the
epitome of professional-
ism and going above and
beyond the call of duty,
and Carmelo DiSalvo and
Kelsie Worden for aiding
me in countless ways. In
addition, the folks at the
Bank Eastern of Oregon,
especially Bev, were very
understanding and in-
strumental in helping me
get Mother’s finances in
order. Recently, I went
to Les Schwab to have a
punctured bicycle tire re-
paired, so I could get out
for some daily exercise.
The employee who assist-
ed me stopped what he was
doing, and when he was
done, he refused to accept
any payment. All the guys
at Les Schwab were fantas-
tic. These are only a few
examples, but there were
innumerable other acts of
kindness. I have travelled
extensively and have never
before encountered such a
ly and hospitable people.
You all should be proud of
yourselves.
