Mustang Track and Field off to a great start
The Heppner Mustang
track and field team had
their first meet of the season
last Thursday at Hermiston
High School. The 18-team
meet was filled with many
large and small schools,
which made for fierce com-
petition. Heppner put up
several state best marks
which led the boys’ team
to a 4 th place finish behind
Walla Walla, Prosser and
Hermiston and the girls to
an 11 th place finish.
Individually, the Mus-
tangs had many strong fin-
ishes. In the field events,
Heppner had several top
10 finishes. For men’s long
jump Jayden Wilson fin-
ished in 7 th with a jump
of 18 feet 4.5 inches. Ja-
cob Wallace secured a 4 th
place finish in javelin with
a throw of 131 feet 7 inches.
Senior Derek Howard had
a strong day finishing 2 nd
in shot put and 3 rd in discus
with throws of 47 feet 3
inches and 123 feet 9 inches
respectively. In the girls’
field events Hannah Finch
finished 8 th in triple jump
with a mark of 28 feet even.
For the running events
Heppner had many top 10
finishes including a few
2A state best times. In the
sprints Mason Lehman and
Jackson Lehman finished
1 st and 5 th respectively in
the 400 with times of 55.57
seconds and 58.28 seconds.
On the girl’s side Madelyn
Nichols finished 5 th in the
400 with a time of 66.49
seconds.
In other running events
Hunter Nichols and Trent
Smith finished 3 rd and 8 th
respectively in the 800 me-
ters with times of 2:01.85
and 2:10.37. Nichols time
is currently leading 2A state
marks. Madelyn Nichols
finished 5 th in the 800 with
a time of 2:35.76. In the
1600-meter race Hunter
Nichols finished 5 th with a
time of 4:34.97 and Trevor
Antonucci finished 7 th with
a time of 4:48.76. Anto-
nucci destroyed the field in
the 3200-meter race win-
ning handily with a time of
10:28.14.
In the relays, Heppner’s
4x400 meter boys team
secured a 2 nd place finish
with Trent Smith, Mason
Lehman, Jayden Wilson
and Hunter Nichols scoring
a time of 3:44.45, narrowly
missing 1 st place by 0.04
seconds. The girls 4x400
team comprised of Hailey
Holmgren, Julianna Tee-
man, Hannah Finch and
Madelyn Nichols captured
8 th place with a time of
4:55.24.
