prayers.

The Heppner girls’ bas-
ketball team is heading
to the state 2A basketball
tournament after winning
their home state playoff
game on Saturday. This is
the second consecutive year
that the team has earned
a berth in the tournament.
The Mustangs punched
their ticket by defeating the
Santiam Wolverines in front
of a packed home crowd by
a score of 59-47.
Right from the start the
Lady Mustangs dominated
the game. Within the first
two minutes the girls had a
7-1 lead. They extended the
lead and finished the first
quarter up 19-7. Some ear-
ly foul trouble slowed the
game some in the second
quarter, but the Mustangs
still increased their lead
heading into halftime up
26-11.
Santiam was a very
physical and scrappy defen-
sive team, yet the pressure
didn’t bother the girls who
matched the intensity. After
the third quarter the Mus-
tangs had a commanding
45-25 lead. The girls then
cruised to the finish achiev-
ing the victory. “The home
crowd and student cheer
section really got the girls
fired up to play,” said Coach
Rob Wilson.
The girls had a very
balanced scoring attack led
by sophomore Sydney Wil-
son with 18 points and team
leader in assists. Senior
Madison Combe had one of
her best games of the year
scoring 13 points and get-
ting the crowd on their feet
with a bone crushing screen
in the fourth quarter. Soph-
omore Madison Ashbeck
had a great game chipping
in 10 points. Senior Jacee
Currin had eight points,
running the point guard
position. Sophomore Mad-
elyn Nichols scored seven
points and led the team
in rebounding. Freshman
ZaBrena Masterson had
two points and sophomore
Marlee Mitchell added one
point.

Mustangs is a second-round
playoff game at the Pend-
leton Convention Center
on Thursday, Feb. 28 at
6:30 p.m. against the third
ranked Oakland Oakers.
According to a spokesper-
son, the girls appreciate
everyone for their support
and hope to see it continue
at the tournament.
