Mustang boys’ basketball season ends
The Heppner Mustang
boys’ basketball team saw
their season come to an
end in the first round of the
OSAA 2A State Basketball
Championships. The Mus-
tangs lost to the Kennedy
Trojans 56-38 in front of a
standing room only crowd
in the Heppner High School
gymnasium.
The gym was filled
with excitement and the
student cheering section
was loud the entire evening.
The teams traded baskets
and they played well in
the first quarter. When the
quarter came to an end the
Mustangs led by the score
of 11-10.
The second quarter was
played as well and as close
as the first. Kennedy out-
scored the Mustangs by one
point and the game was tied
at halftime 20-20.
The Trojans came out
after halftime and took
control of the game. Their
relentless defensive pres-
sure took its toll on the
Mustangs. Kennedy out-
scored Heppner 16-3 in the
quarter and led after three
periods 36-23.
Heppner rallied in the
fourth quarter and played
much better, but they
couldn’t get any closer on
the scoreboard. Kennedy
won the contest by the score
of 56-38.
Tyler Carter led the
Mustangs in scoring with
14. He also had six re-
bounds and a steal. Dakota
Howard had nine points,
three rebounds and one as-
sist. Trent Smith scored sev-
en points, had an assist and
a steal in the game. Scoring
two points each were Cason
Mitchell, Gibson McCurry,
Derek Howard and Ma-
son Lehman. Mitchell also
had four rebounds and a
steal while McCurry con-
tributed two rebounds and
blocked a shot. Lehman
also had seven rebounds in
the game for the Mustangs.
Logan Burright had four
rebounds and two assists,
Justin McAninch recorded
two rebounds and had an
assist while Hunter Nich-
ols had one assist and one
blocked shot.
This year’s team fin-
ished an outstanding sea-
son with a 18-8 overall
record. They were 11-1 in
conference play and were
the Blue Mountain Confer-
ence Champions. They then
went on and won the BMC
District Championship at
the Pendleton Convention
Center.
The team will lose 11
players to graduation this
year. The seniors are Ty-
ler Carter, Hunter Nich-
Four community hear-
ings will be hosted by the
Joint Committee on Carbon
Reduction in the coming
weeks across Oregon to
hear constituent testimony
on the proposed cap and
trade legislation (HB 2020).
Recent studies indicate
that the cap and trade pro-
gram under consideration
will have a significant im-
pact on local communi-
ties. Both fuel and natural
gas prices are projected to
increase, fuel prices are
estimated to rise 16 cents
per gallon just in the first
year and natural gas is es-
timated to increase by over
50 percent.

Cason Mitchell (3) shoots for the basket while Justin McAninch
(23) blocks the opponent and Tyler Carter (0) prepares to assist.
ols, Reno Ferguson, Cason
Mitchell, Keegan Gibbs,
Trent Smith, Dakota How-
ard, Gibson McCurry, Justin

and Derek Howard. They
will certainly be missed
by the Mustang basketball
program.
