Road Bowling returns to St. Patrick’s
weekend schedule of events
Road Bowling will re-
turn to this year’s St. Pat-
rick’s Weekend on Sunday,
Mar. 17 at 1 p.m., closing
out the weekend. The com-
petition will be held on
Balm Fork Road with reg-
istration beginning at 12:45
p.m. and the competition
starting at 1.
This Irish sport dates
back to the 1600s when it
was played in America by
Irish troops in West Virgin-
ia during the Civil War. In
recent years, a resurgence
of interest in the sport has
developed in both Ireland
and the United States. Hep-
pner’s event has gained
popularity since it was first
offered in 2006 and entries
are limited to a maximum
of 20 teams.
Teams of two to four
members compete on a
course approximately one
mile long by tossing the
iron and steel “bowls” that
are slightly smaller than
a tennis ball and weigh
28 ounces. The team that
completes the course with
the fewest tosses wins.
Road Bowling registra-
tion forms may be picked
up at the chamber or at city
hall or can be printed from
the Heppner Chamber web-
site. Entry fee is $20 per
team and half of the purse
will be divided between
the top three teams. The
winning team’s name is also
added to the trophy that is
kept at the chamber office.
For additional infor-
mation or to register for
the event, contact the Hep-
pner Chamber at 541-676-
5536 or heppnerchamber@
centurytel.net. Spectators
are welcome to attend the
event.
