Mustangs now 5-0 in conference play
The Heppner Mustangs
boys’ basketball team won
two more games to give
them a perfect 5-0 record
in Blue Mountain Confer-
ence play. The Mustangs,
who are 11-6 overall, beat
the Enterprise Outlaws 68-
31 and then defeated the
Union Bobcats by the score
of 73-52.
Against the Outlaws,
Heppner came out and took
control of the game early
as they led after the first
quarter by the score of 17-8.
The Mustangs kept up the
defensive intensity in the
second quarter and only let
the Outlaws score a total of
four points. Heppner led at
the half 35-12.
The offense continued
to click for the Mustangs as
they scored 16 points in the
third quarter and only let the
Outlaws get seven. Heppner
led after three quarters 51-
19. The fourth quarter was
much of the same for the
Mustangs as they outscored
Enterprise by five and won
the game by the score of
68-31.
Trent Smith went 4-7
from three-point range and
led the team in scoring with
19 points. He also had three
rebounds and three steals in
the game. Justin McAninch
had 10 points, three re-
bounds and a blocked shot
for the Mustangs. Logan
Burright was next with

seven points, one rebound
and one assist while Tyler
Carter finished with six
points, five rebounds and
two assists. Reno Ferguson
scored five points and he
also had two rebounds.
Dakota Howard had four
points, five rebounds, one
assist and blocked a shot on
the night. With three points
each were Hunter Nichols
and Mason Lehman. Nich-
ols also had five assists, one
rebound, one blocked shot
and a steal. Lehman had
three rebounds to go along
with his three points. With
two points in the game were
Cason Mitchell, Gibson
McCurry and Derek How-
ard. Mitchell also had four
rebounds and a steal while
McCurry hauled down three
rebounds and had three big
blocks in the game. Derek
Howard also had three re-
bounds and a steal for the
team. Keegan Gibbs didn’t
score in the game but he had
three assists and a rebound.
In the game with the
Bobcats, Heppner led after
one quarter 20-15. It was
the second quarter that
made the difference in the
game as the Mustangs out-
scored the Bobcats 16-5.
Heppner led at halftime
36-20.
The second half was
very close but the Mustangs
didn’t let the Bobcats get
any closer. Heppner won
the game by the score of
73-52.
Burright led the Mus-
tangs in scoring with 17.
He also had five rebounds,
four steals and one assist for
the Mustangs. Carter was
next with 16 points, eight
big rebounds and an assist.
Smith scored eight points,
had five rebounds and one
assist in the game. McCurry
had a good all-around game
as he scored six points, had
six rebounds, blocked two
shots and had one steal
and one assist. Nichols
scored five points, led the
team in rebounding with
seven and had five assist.
McAninch also scored five
points and he had three
rebounds. Three players
scored four points each as
Mitchell had four points
and three rebounds, Dakota
Howard scored four and
recorded four rebounds
and Derek Howard also
notched four points to go
along with two rebounds.
Ferguson scored two points
and had two rebounds while
Gavin Hanna-Robinson
also had two points and one
rebound. Gibbs recorded
one rebound and one assist
for the Mustangs.
This weekend the Mus-
tangs will travel to Pilot
Rock to take on the Rock-
ets and then will host the
Weston-McEwen Tiger-
scots.

The Heppner Mustang
JV boys’ basketball team
pushed their overall record
to 12-2 with a pair of wins
last weekend. The team
defeated the Enterprise
Outlaws 57-18 and then
beat the Union Bobcats by
the score of 54-32.
Against the Outlaws,
the Mustangs led at half-
time 31-8. A great defensive
effort by Heppner held En-
terprise to only 10 points in
the second half and secured
the win.
Roy Collins led the
team with 13 points. Casey
Fletcher and Joe Sherman
recorded nine points each.
With six points each were
Kannon Wilkins and Kellen
Grant. Gavin Hanna-Rob-
inson had five points and
Brock Hisler finished with
four. Jorden Sweeney and
Jackson Lehman finished
with two points each and
Cody Fletcher had one.
In defeating the Bob-
cats, Heppner led after the
first quarter 12-1. They
then outscored the Bobcats
17-5 in the second to lead
at halftime 29-6. The teams
played nearly even in the
second half as Union used
several of their varsity play-
ers in the final two quarters.
Wilkins led the team
with 10 points and Han-
na-Robinson had eight.
Scoring six points each
in the game were Grant,
Lehman, Hisler and Derrick
Smith. Collins had four and
with three points each were
Sweeney and Sherman. Ca-
sey Fletcher finished with
two points in the game.
This week the JV Mus-
tangs look to continue their
winning ways as they take
on the Pilot Rock Rockets
and the Weston-McEwen
Tigerscots.

District Hoopshoot event
was held Jan. 6 in Hermis-
ton with 38 kids ranging in
age from 8-13. The north-
east district includes Hood
River, The Dalles, Condon,
Heppner, Hermiston, Mil-
ton-Freewater, Baker City
and Enterprise.
Taking first, second and
third in the 8-9 year-old
Bank of Eastern Oregon’s
boys category were Jacoby
Roberts, Condon; Brennan
Garrick, Baker and Keaton
Coiner, Heppner. Girls ages
8-9 winners were Sofia Ro-
driquez, Hermiston, Colbi
Bachman, Baker and Molly
McMurray, Condon.
First place in 10-11
year-old boys went to Jason
Hull, The Dalles, second
to Jose Juarez, Hermiston
and third to Kale Dalke,
Baker. The same age group
for girls had Lily Langford,
Milton-Freewater in first,
Gracie Spike, Baker in
second and Willow Hand,
Condon in third.
In the 12-13 year-old
boys group, Hudson Spike,
Baker was first, Trey Hodg-
es, The Dalles second and
Lucas Power, Enterprise
third. Taking first in the 12-
13 year-old girls category
was Julie Hull, The Dalles,
Madilynn Perkins, Mil-
ton-Freewater second and
Josi Coggins, Enterprise
in third.
First place winners will
travel to Silverton, OR on
Feb. 16 to compete in the
Oregon State Hoopshoot
competition. Winners of the
state competition will com-
pete in Regionals in March.
