The Heppner Mustang
boys’ basketball team start-
ed the new year leading the
Blue Mountain Conference
with a perfect 3-0 record.
The Mustangs, who are
9-6 overall, finished up a
tough pre-season schedule
which included playing a
4A team and four 3A teams
with a 6-6 record. Besides
playing several local teams,
the Mustangs traveled to
the Willamette Valley for
a couple of games and par-
ticipated in a tournament
where they played a pair of
Washington schools.
The Mustangs opened
up conference play before
Christmas with a home
win over the Grant Union
Prospectors by the score of
59-55. They then traveled
to Stanfield and beat the
Tigers 56-37. This past
weekend the team hit the
road again and beat the
Weston-McEwen Tiger-
scots by the score of 48-33.
In the game with
Weston-McEwen, the Mus-
tangs led at the end of the
first quarter 10-6. They
then jumped out to an 18-6
lead that forced a Tigerscot
timeout. Heppner continued
to control the tempo of the
game and stretched their
lead to 28-14 at the half.
The Mustangs came out
fired up after the halftime
break and led 37-24 at the
end of the third quarter. The
Tigerscots could get not get
the score any closer as the
Mustangs would answer
every run they made. The
Mustangs played smart and
took care of the basketball
in the last few minutes of
the game and won by the
score of 48-33.
The overall team defen-
sive effort for the Mustangs
was outstanding as they
held the Tigerscots to only
33 points for the game. That
is well below their sea-
son average. Although the
Mustangs didn’t shoot the
ball particularly well on the
night, it was the defensive
effort that clearly won the
game for them.
Trent Smith led the
Mustangs with 16 points.
He also had seven rebounds
and two steals in the game.
Tyler Carter finished with a
double-double as he scored
13 points and hauled down
12 rebounds. Tyler also led
the team in assist with four.
Justin McAninch scored
eight points and had three
rebounds. He also blocked
three shots in the game.
Hunter Nichols played well
and scored four points,
had five rebounds, one as-
sist and a steal. Gibson
McCurry pitched in three
points, four rebounds, two
steals and he blocked a
shot. Logan Burright had
a good overall game with
two points, eight rebounds,
two assists and a steal
for the Mustangs. Cason
Mitchell hustled his way to
two points, five rebounds
and a blocked shot in the
game. Mason Lehman was
charged with playing de-
fense on the Tigerscots
best player for most of the
game and did an outstand-
ing job at it. Although he
didn’t score in the game,
he had six rebounds, an
assist and blocked a shot.
Derek Howard ripped down
three rebounds and Dakota
Howard finished with two
rebounds and a steal.
The Mustangs continue
conference play this week-
end with two home games.
On Friday they host the
Enterprise Outlaws with
the JV Boys game starting
at 3 p.m. Saturday they host
the Union Bobcats with the
JV Boys starting the day off
at 1 p.m.
