Mustang volleyball season ends
The Heppner Mustang
volleyball team saw their
season come to an end in
the first round of the OSAA
2A State Volleyball Cham-
pionship tournament. The
Mustangs lost to the Port-
land Christian Royals by
the scores of 25-13, 25-18
and 25-20.
The Royals (21-3) and
ranked 4 th in the state, fea-
tured some outstanding
athletes and a 6’2” big
time hitter who has already
signed to play college vol-
leyball. The Mustangs end
their season with a record
of 16-13 and are 12 th in the
state rankings.
The first set saw the
Mustangs jump out to a
quick 4-1 lead. Portland
Christian then tied the score
at 5-5 and the teams were
also tied at 9-9. From that
point the Royals took con-
trol and led for the rest of
the set. It was 18-9 before
the Mustangs scored again
in the set. Heppner then
took the next three points,
but the Royals continued to
roll and won the set by the
score of 25-13.
After a quick 1-0 lead
for the Mustangs in set
number two, the Royals
took over and led the rest
of the way. Heppner did get
to within one point at 9-8
but then could not get any
closer than three points at
20-17. Portland Christian
again took control and won
the set 25-18.
Heppner led the third
set early until the Royals
tied the score at 9-9. The
Mustangs then made a run
and led the set 15-10 before
Portland Christian came
back to tie it at 16-16. The
Royals scored the next six
points to lead 22-16 before
the Mustangs scored again.
Heppner pulled to within
three at 23-20, but couldn’t
get any closer and lost the
set 25-20.
It was an exciting
match with both teams
making some unbelievable
plays. Many hard hits were
dug up and hit back over the
net. Players were diving on
the court and into the stands
to save balls from hitting
the ground. A large crowd
of Mustang fans traveled
to Portland to cheer on
their team and even several
Heppner fans that live in the
Portland area attended.
Heppner will lose five
seniors off of this year’s
team. They are Jenna Mc-
Cullough, Susanna Teeman,
Dakota Durfey, Madison

Combe, Claire Grieb and
Jacee Currin. They will
certainly be missed by the
Mustang volleyball pro-
gram in the future. Fortu-
nately there is a solid group
of younger girls that played
a lot this year and did very
well. The future of Mustang
volleyball still looks very
bright.
Correction
In last week’s edition of
the Heppner Gazette-Times
it was reported that the
Morrow County planning
commission work sessions
for renewable energy would
both be held in Heppner,
which was incorrect. The
Oct. 30 session was held at
the Bartholomew Building
in Heppner, but the Dec. 4
meeting will be held at the
Riverfront Center in Board-
man at 6 p.m. The editor
apologizes for the error.
