September colder than normal
Over the Tee Cup
According to prelim-
inary data received by
NOAA’s National Weath-
er Service in Pendleton,
temperatures at Heppner
averaged colder than nor-
mal during the month of
September.
The average tempera-
ture was 59.7 degrees which
was 1.9 degrees below nor-
mal. High Temperatures
averaged 73.7 degrees,
which was 2.9 degrees be-
low normal. The highest
was 90 degrees on the 8 th .
Low temperatures averaged
45.6 degrees, which was 1.0
degree below normal. The
lowest was 38 degrees, on
the 24 th .

The Willow Creek
Country Club ladies held
their fall fun day and bi-an-
nual meeting on Sept. 25,
a beautiful, sunny day. A
group picture was taken and
the fall business meeting
was held prior to scramble
teams being announced for
the day. After the scramble,
the Ladies’ Board hosted a
lunch for the ladies.
First place in the scram-
ble went to Virginia Grant,
Betty Burns, Kathy Martin
and Mary Riggs. The sec-
ond place team was Nancy
Propheter, Judy Harris and
Josie Kindsfather. Jeanne
Creswick got a chip-in.
Awards were present-
ed to the Eddi Skow Club
Championship tournament
winners, with Nancy Proph-
eter receiving the club gross
champion award. The Eddi
Skow net champion was Pat
Edmundson. In the senior
division, Karen Thompson
was named the gross cham-
pion and Pat Dougherty was
the net champion.
Event winners for the
entire season were Virginia
Grant, Nancy Propheter
and Bunnie Lindsay in first,
second and third for birdies.
It was a tie between Karen
Haguewood and Bunnie
Lindsay for first place in
chip-ins. Second place re-
sulted in a six-way tie with
Pat Dougherty, Loa Heide-
mann, Judy Harris, Bev
Steagall, Virginia Grant and
Pat Edmundson.
First place eclectic
board went to Jeanne Cre-
swick. Second was Pat
Dougherty and third was
a tie with Karen Hague-
wood, Kris Linder and Bev
Steagall.
The new officers for
2019 are Karen Hague-
wood, president; Jeanne

LCAC will hold a meeting on Thursday, Oct. 4 at 9
a.m. in the Port of Morrow Well Springs room located at
2 Marine Drive in Boardman.

The Heppner Cemetery
Maintenance District will
hold its monthly meeting
on Wednesday, Oct. 10 at
5:30 p.m. at the Ag Service
Building conference room,
430 W Linden Way.
Agenda items include
minutes of previous meet-
ing, financial report and
cemetery operations. Meet-
ings of the Heppner Ceme-
tery Maintenance District
are open to the public ac-
cording to ORS 192.640(1).

Ladies who are inter-
ested in golfing on Tues-
days in October are invited
to join a just for fun day
of golf, teeing off around
10 a.m.
The WCCC ladies
group meets every Tuesday,
April through September,
with play beginning at 10
a.m. The first Tuesday will
be April 2 with the kick-off
breakfast at 9 a.m. followed
by the bi-annual meeting
and nine holes of golf.
Chamber lunch
meeting
The next lunch meeting
of the Heppner Chamber
of Commerce will be held
Thursday, Oct. 4 at noon, in
the Heppner City Hall con-
ference room. This meeting
will be for all entities re-
ports. RSVP’s are required.
The Heppner Water Control District will meet
Wednesday, Oct. 3 at 1:30 p.m. at the Ag Service Center
conference room. The purpose of the meeting is to dis-
cuss an erosion control project on the Hinton Creek fire
properties.

The outlook for Octo-
ber from NOAA’s Climate
Prediction Center calls for
near normal temperatures
and below normal precip-
itation. Normal highs for
Heppner fall from 71 de-
grees at the start of October
to 58 degrees at the end of
October. Normal lows fall
from 42 degrees to 35 de-
grees. The 30-year normal
precipitation is 1.14 inches.
Historical
society to
meet
The annual meeting of
the Morrow County His-
torical Society will meet
Sunday, Oct. 7 at 2 p.m. at
Two Hags Pizza, located
adjacent to the court house
in Heppner. The purpose
of the meeting is to elect
officers and conduct other
required business for the
coming year.
Annual dues of $5 will
be due at the meeting and
pizza is no-host. For addi-

Justice Court Report Marriage Licenses
The Loop Morrow County Transportation Statewide
Transportation Improvement Fund advisory committee
will be meeting on Oct. 9 at 10 a.m. at Irrigon City Hall
in the conference room.
The agenda will include the appointment of the vice
chair and going over the template that will be submitted
with projects to Oregon Department of Transportation.

The Heppner Mustang
volleyball team split their
Blue Mountain Confer-
ence matches last week.
The Mustangs (11-9 over-
all, 4-2 BMC) lost to the
Weston-McEwen Tiger-
scots in four sets 19-25, 13-
25, 26-24, 14-25 in Athena.
They then hosted and swept
the Stanfield Tigers 25-19,
25-14, 25-22.
Against the Tigerscots,
the number two ranked
team in the state, Heppner
came out and battled to the
end in the first set. It was a
back and forth set that fi-
nally saw Weston-McEwen
win it 25-21. The Tigerscots
made quick work of the
second set, winning by the
score of 25-14. The Mus-
tangs battled back and won
the exciting third set by the
score of 26-24. The fourth
set was close with several
ties leading up to a tied
score at 14-14. After that
the Tigerscots took control
and outscored the Mustangs
11-0 to win the set 25-14
and the match 3-1.
The Mustangs beat the
Tigers in straight sets in
front of a large home crowd
that saw the student section
in a total blackout of dress
and face paint. The loud

Red Barn 5K
scheduled
The Red Barn 5K, a fundraiser for the Heppner/Ione
cross country team will be held Oct. 13. The entry fee for
the event is $10 and a shirt is $10.
Registration for the one-mile, two-mile or 5K run/
walk will be from 7:45 to 8:15 a.m.at the LDS Church
on Hwy 74 and Tom Street in Lexington on the day of
the event, with the run beginning at 8:30 a.m.

table of contents lists “The Arthur Gammell Story” by
Merlyn Robinson. This story was included in the 2017
“Morrow County Chronicles” XXXIV, but not in the
XXXV volume.

Mustangs even trailed for
a while. They fought back
and tied the score at 19-19.
Claire Grieb then served
the final six points of the
set as the Mustangs got the
victory 25-19.
Set number two saw the
Mustangs take control early
and never give up the lead.
They won that set easily
25-14.
The third set was much
closer all the way through
it. Neither team had more
than a two point lead until
late in the set. There were 5
ties in the set with the last
one being 15-15. Heppner
finally took control after a
kill by Sydney Wilson gave
the Mustangs a 21-18 lead.
The Tigers couldn’t get any
closer and the Mustangs
won by a score of 25-22.
Jenna McCullough and
Sydney Wilson each had
seven kills in the match
and Nicole Propheter added
six. Claire Grieb had six
aces serving the ball while
Genevieve Smith recorded
nine assist and Amy Turrell
had eight digs.
The Mustangs JV team
lost to Weston-McEwen
3-1 but then bounced back
and beat the Tigers 3-0 by
the scores of 25-23, 25-16,
25-12.
Up next for the volley-
ball team is a match with
the number three ranked
Grant Union Prospectors
at home on Thursday. They
will then host the Union
Bobcats and the Enterprise
Outlaws on Saturday.
New season for First
Friday begins
First Friday Friends of
Jesus begins a new season
on Friday, Oct. 5 at the All
Saints Parish Hall on the
corner of Gale and Church
in Heppner. A morning
filled with Bible stories,
games, crafts and music
begins at 8:30 a.m. and con-
cludes at 12:30 p.m. after a
free lunch is served.
There is no cost to at-
tend, and all community
kids ages four to 12 are wel-
come. Additional informa-
