The Oregon Depart-
ment of Veterans Affairs
encourages everyone to
support suicide awareness
on Sept. 22 in recognition
of the 22 veteran suicides
that occur across the nation
each day. In Oregon, two
people die each day by sui-
cide and one in five victims
of suicide is a veteran.
There will be a suicide
awareness event in Heppner
at the Heppner Activity
park from noon to 4 p.m. on
Sept. 22. Hot dogs and all
the fixings and Tillamook
ice cream will be provided
by the Morrow County Vet-
erans Services. Music will
be by The Jagerbums. Ev-
eryone is invited to attend,
veterans and non-veterans.
A second suicide
awareness event will be
held at the Port of Morrow
Riverfront conference cen-
ter on Oct. 27 from noon to
4 p.m., with music provided
by Steven K and the Boun-
$2,750
ty Hunters. The Morrow
County Veterans Services
will serve a spaghetti dinner
with salad, bread and Tilla-
mook ice cream. RSVP to
mcvets@co.morrow.or.us
by Oct. 12 to secure a meal.
Veterans are at risk for
suicide for all the reasons a
non-veteran might be, such
as coping with the effects
of aging, legal problems,
exposure to bullying behav-
ior, relationship problems
or financial stress.
Additionally, veterans
may be dealing with lin-
gering effects from their
military service, difficulties
with readjusting to family
roles and civilian life after
discharge, and underly-
ing mental health and/or
substance abuse issues ag-
gravated by their military
service.
Help save a life by ask-
ing and listening. Keep
them safe, help them con-
nect, follow up.

beginning the year with

tion has really helped all
parties involved,” stated

how to best help their stu-
dent and this has helped
start a positive six year rela-
tionship with our school and
