A view of the Willow
Creek Terrace facility en-
courages visitors to join us
for a chat, a tour, a relaxing
view. It does not, however,
offer details of the not-for-
profit organization that aims
to serve individuals who
wish to have some profes-
sional assistance with some
daily needs, provided in our
small, familiar community.
Thus, today’s column does
offer a view behind the
scenes, so to speak.
Willow Creek Terrace,
as a not-for-profit organi-
zation, is not part of the
Morrow County Health
District. It does, however,
contract with the district for
management services. And
through the district, the Ter-
race has access to nursing,
bookkeeping, maintenance,
purchasing, educational,
financial accounting, and
other support.
Daily operation of the
Terrace is the responsibility
of Administrator George
Nairns and the Terrace staff
of eleven employees. The
board of directors meets
quarterly, with a smaller
governance committee
meeting in the month pre-
ceding each board meet-
ing. Presently serving on
the board are Jeff Bailey,
JoAnne Burleson (previous
chairperson), Tim Dick-
enson, Jon Gould, Mark
Miller (also a governance
committee member), Shir-
ley George (secretary and
governance committee),
Nancy Snider (vice chair
and governance committee)
and Robin Bredfield (chair-
person and governance
committee). Among several
other individuals who have
served various lengths of
time on the board is recently
retiring, long-term member
Diana Ball.
At its last meeting, the
board of directors recog-
nized the advisability of
creating a marketing and
public relations subcom-
mittee. Readers are encour-
aged to contact a board
member or Nairns to show
interest in serving on the
subcommittee, which will
distribute brochures, create
a Facebook page, update the
web site and produce news
articles.
Board members have
agreed to work on a big
project that the Terrace staff
has enthusiastically begun
to organize. Rocking the
Longest Day will fall on
June 21, when the Terrace
will sponsor the event in
support of the Alzheimer’s
Association’s fight against
this disease that affects mil-
lions of Americans. Readers
are invited to participate in
the “rock off” that will run
from 5:30 a.m. to 8 p.m.
Four (or more if needed)
adult and four children’s
rocking chairs will be avail-
able. Each participant can
sign up for a half-hour or
more of rocking by coming
in or calling 541-676-0004.
The rockers can contribute
pledges they have collected
and/or their own donations.
The day will truly be
festive and filled with ad-
ditional activities. A free
continental breakfast for
participants will be served
from 5:30 until 10 a.m. A
free barbecue lunch will be
served from 11:30 a.m. until
1 p.m., sponsored by the
Bank of Eastern Oregon.
Topping off the lunch will
be cupcakes compliments
of Krystal Haak, owner
of Sweet Delights in Pilot
Rock.
Everyone will have a
chance to win a door prize,
with drawings throughout
the day (no need to be pres-
ent at a drawing). Items will
also be featured as raffle
prizes, the winning tickets
to be drawn at the end of the
day. Anyone who wishes
to contribute items for ei-
ther of these two activities
should contact Nairns.
Available for purchase
that day, in memory of
someone who has demen-
tia, will be forget-me-nots
that have been started by
the Terrace residents. Buy-
ers will have the option of
planting them at the Terrace
or taking them to be planted
elsewhere.
Coloring for children
and sidewalk art opportuni-
ties will be offered all day.
And educational handouts,
discussions and a video will
be presented three times
that day, once in the morn-
ing, once in early afternoon
and once in the evening.
Enthusiasm is common
at the Terrace, so moth-
ers on Mother’s Day were
honored with a very special
luncheon and the Tea Party
yesterday, which included
cucumber sandwiches, was
a hit with many. Tomorrow,
Mustang Mop-Up will also
receive enthusiastic ap-
preciation and interaction
with the young workers.
This month that began with
May Day and then Cinco
de Mayo has featured sev-
eral special observations
and will feature more be-
fore it ends with Memorial
Day and then Mint Julep
Day. Both the serious and
the frivolous are viewed
with enthusiasm at Willow
Creek Terrace.
