Heppner track teams compete in early season meets
The Heppner men’s and
women’s track teams have
stepped up to the competi-
tion in early season meets.
After stormy conditions led
to an early end to the Buck
Track Classic in Pendleton,
athletes were ready to race
in warm, calm conditions in
Boardman on Friday. The
Riverside Twilight Relays
Invitational included lim-
ited single runner/thrower
events and multiple relays
that are not included in
normal meets. The irregular
meet allowed Heppner to
show its depth as a team.
The meet started with
outstanding performances
from the throwers. Derek
Howard threw 124’4.5”
in the discus for a second
place finish, 134’7” in the
javelin for a fourth place
finish, and 47’1.5” in the
shot put for a first place fin-
ish. Alex Lindsay received
first place finishes in both
the long jump and the triple
jump and Makayla Silvia
jumped 4’6” for a second
place finish in the high
jump.
Many personal and sea-
sonal records were broken
in the running events. The
meet included the follow-
ing single runner events
only: 1500 meter run, 100
meter dash, 100/110 meter
hurdles and the 300 meter
hurdles. Hunter Nichols led
the men’s 1500 meter run
from the first lap, finishing
in 4:16.49. Trevor Antonnu-
ci followed him in second
with a time of 4:39:76 and
Jorden Sweeney in fourth
with a time of 5:01.85.
Makayla Silvia had an
outstanding performance in
the 100 meter dash, running
a personal record time of
13.87 seconds and finish-
ing a competitive race in
fourth place. Alison Cecil
ran a season record time of
14.56 seconds for a tenth
place finish. Jacob Wallace
ran the 110 meter hurdles in
18.98 seconds for a second
place finish. Leo Waite ran
the 300 meter hurdles in
a personal record time of
48.74 seconds and finished
in third place.
According to a spokes-
person, relay events are
enjoyed by every athlete
on the team and the various
relays allowed most of the
athletes to participate in
one or more relay event. In
this meet, the normal 4x100
relay and 4x400 relay were
joined by a 4x200, a sprint
medley relay (100-100-
200-400) and a distance
medley relay (200-400-
800-1200).

4x400 relay team, made
up of Alex Lindsay, Jayden
Wilson, Mason Lehman and
Hunter Nichols, finished
first with a time of 3:43.97,
putting them second in
the 2A state rankings. The
men’s and women’s sprint
medley relay teams per-
formed well, with the men’s
team of Blake Wolters,
Jackson Lehman, Austin
Moses, and Trevor An-
tonnuci, finishing second.
The women’s team which
included Hailey Holmgren,
Makayla Silvia, Alison Ce-
cil and Madelyn Nichols
finished first.
Overall, the men’s team
won the meet with 134
points and the women’s
team came in fifth with 46
points. Personal and sea-
sonal records were achieved
across the whole team.

MCSD DRILL
-Continued from PAGE ONE
to be “reunified” with their
children.
According to super-
intendent Dirk Dirksen,
performing this type of drill
is essential to prepare staff
and students in following
established procedures for
various incidents that can
occur. “We can have all the
safety protocols we need
in place in our schools, but
if we don’t practice them,
they will simply not be as
effective as they could be,”
Dirksen said.
School officials noted
that since Apr. 13 is a no
school/in-service day in
the Morrow County School
District, it offers an ideal
time to conduct the drill.
For any questions about
the emergency drill, please
contact the Morrow County
School District office in
Heppner at 541-676-9128.
The Loop
committee to meet
The Loop Morrow County Transportation advisory
committee will meet Apr. 17 at 3 p.m. in the Heppner City
Hall. The agenda will include revenue/expense reports,
ridership numbers, travel shed report, Medicaid rides,
STIF update and other business.
