Lady Mustangs qualify for
district
After a few years hi-
atus, the Heppner girls’
basketball team has quali-
fied for District. The much
improved team punched
their tag by beating Pilot
Rock in an exciting game
by the score of 43-40. The
Mustangs dominated early
and had an eight point lead
after the first quarter. The
Rockets trimmed the lead
to five at the halftime and
closed it even further at the
end of the third quarter due
to some solid three point
shooting. The Mustangs
never gave up, fought until
the end and clinched the
victory.
It was a great night for
a win as it clinched a dis-
trict berth and capped off
senior night recognition.
The senior players and their
families recognized were
Morgan Correa, Kacie Gray
and Sophie Grant.
Strong performances
were had by several girls
to achieve the win. Sydney
Wilson led all scorers with
20 points and 11 rebounds.
Jacee Currin added 12
points, Morgan Correa four
points, Madelyn Nichols
three and Madison Combe
and Sophie Grant each
added two. Senior Kacie
Gray led the team in assists.
The Mustang ladies
(13-6 overall, 5-3 league)
will compete this coming
Friday evening in Pend-
leton against the loser of
the Weston McEwen and
Culver playoff game for a
chance to earn a state tour-
nament qualification.

Mustangs finish second in
conference
The Heppner Mustang
boys’ basketball team lost
their last regular season
game of the year to the Pilot
Rock Rockets by the score
of 55-44. The Mustangs
(11-8,6-2) are currently
the 14 th ranked team in the
OSAA Basketball rankings
out of the 41 2A teams in
the state.
The Mustangs jumped
out and secured the lead at
the start of the game against
the Rockets. They led 13-8
at the end of the first quar-
ter. The scores flip flopped
in the second quarter and
the teams were tied at half-
time 21-21.
Heppner outscored the
Rockets by two to take a
35-33 lead into the fourth
quarter. Pilot Rock surged
ahead and took the lead as
they scored 22 in the final
frame and the Mustangs
could only get nine points
of their own. That was the

difference in the game and
it gave the Rockets the 55-
44 win.
Tyler Carter led the
Mustangs in scoring with
10. He also had five re-
bounds in the game. Jus-
tin McAninch scored
eight points and had two
rebounds, one assist and
blocked two shots in the
game. Beau Wolters and
Hunter Nichols had six
points each in the game.
Wolters also added six re-
bounds, two assists, one
steal and one block for the
team. Nichols also had one
rebound and one assist.
Wyatt Steagall had four
points in the game and three
rebounds. Trent Smith also
scored four points to go
along with one assist, one
rebound and two steals.
Kevin Smith scored two
points, had nine rebounds,
one assist and a steal. Alex
Lindsay had two points,
three rebounds and he
blocked a shot while Gib-
son McCurry also scored
two, had six rebounds and
blocked two shots in the
game. Coby Dougherty did
not score in the game but
he had three rebounds and
two assists. Derek Howard
ripped down a rebound for
the Mustangs.
The Mustangs finish
the regular season in sec-
ond place in the confer-
ence and move on to the
district tournament in Pend-
leton. The tournament will
take place at the Pendleton
Convention Center and
the Mustangs will play on
Friday night, Feb. 16 at 6
pm against a team yet to be
determined. The Weston-
McEwen Tigerscots and the
Stanfield Tigers will play
to determine who will be
the Mustangs opponent in
that game.
