Mustangs start new year with wins
The Heppner Mustang
boys’ basketball team start-
ed the new year out right
with two impressive wins.
The Mustangs traveled to
Union and beat the Bobcats
67-48 and then defeated the
Elgin Huskies at home by
the score of 61-39.
At Union, the hot
shooting Bobcats led at the
end of the first quarter 14-
10. Heppner then outscored
Union 19-12 in the second
to take a 29-26 lead into
halftime.
The Mustangs had a
great third quarter and took
control of the game. They
scored 23 points and held
the Bobcats to just 10 and
took a commanding 52-36
lead into the fourth quarter.
The Mustangs also won the
last quarter 15-12 and that
led to the overall victory by
the score of 67-48.
Trent Smith had the
hot shooting hand and led
the team in scoring with
18. He also had two assists,
two steals and a rebound.
Tyler Carter continued his
fine all-around play with 11
points, seven rebounds and
four steals. Kevin Smith
came back from injury
and scored nine points and
had two rebounds in his
first outing of the season.
With six points each were
Wyatt Steagall and Alex
Lindsay. Steagall also had
six rebounds, two steals and
one assist while Lindsay
contributed two rebounds.
Hunter Nichols had four
points, four assists, one
rebound and a steal in the
game. Beau Wolters scored
four points and Logan Bur-
right was next with three.

Burright also had three
rebounds and a steal for
the Mustangs. With two
points each were Dakota
and Derek Howard. Da-
kota also registered three
rebounds, one assist and a
steal while Derek had one
rebound. Justin McAninch
scored two points, had six
rebounds and two blocked
shots in the game. Coby
Dougherty and Gibson Mc-
Curry did not score, but
Dougherty had a steal and a
block while McCurry had a
rebound for the team.
Heppner then hosted
the highly ranked Elgin
Huskies. The Mustangs
jumped out quickly and
took the lead 18-10 after
one quarter. Another 18
point quarter saw the Mus-
tangs lead the game 36-23
at halftime. The Mustangs
then came out with a plan
to play better defense in
the second half. The extra
effort paid off as they held
the Huskies to single digits
in each of the last two quar-
ters. Heppner outscored
Elgin 25-16 in the second
half and got the win by the
score of 61-39.
Kevin Smith had a big
night in his home debut. He
scored 18 points, had seven
rebounds and blocked three
shots. Lindsay and Trent
Smith were next with 11
points each. Lindsay also
recorded four rebounds
and two steals. Smith also
had a steal for the team.
Carter scored 10 points, had
five rebounds and a steal.
Wolters had three points
and a steal while playing
some good defense on the
Huskies best shooter. Stea-
gall had two points, five
rebounds and a steal while
battling foul trouble all
night long. Nichols and Da-
kota Howard each scored
two points in the game.
Nichols also contributed
two assists, three steals and
he and Dakota each also
had a rebound for the Mus-
tangs. McAninch had two
points, one rebound and
two blocked shots while
Dougherty and McCurry
both blocked a shot in the
game.
This week the Mus-
tangs start conference play
with two home games. On
Friday they host the Stan-
field Tigers and then on Sat-
urday the Weston-McEwen
Tigerscots will come to
town.
JV basketball boasts 8-1 record
At the halfway point in
their season, the Heppner
Mustang Junior Varsity
boys’ basketball team has
an impressive 8-1 record.
The JV team starts their
conference schedule this
weekend as they host the
Stanfield Tigers and the
Weston-McEwen Tiger-
scots.
Their only loss of the
year came in their very
first game of the season
at the Western Mennonite
tournament. They lost to the
Chemawa Braves 33-28.
Since then they’ve been on
a roll and have outscored
their opponents 467-232.
They’ve won games
over Pacific 36-12,
McLoughlin 51-29, Irrigon
77-57, Grant Union 59-36,
Umatilla 54-48, Echo 55-
14, Union 76-21 and Elgin
59-15.
The team uses a punish-
ing inside game to go along
with some good 3-point
shooting to score most of
their points. A mixture of
strong man-to-man and
zone defenses keeps their
opponents from scoring
many points.
Members of the JV
team are Reno Ferguson,
Mason Lehman, Keegan
Gibbs, Dakota Howard,
Logan Burright, Kannon
Wilkins, Cason Mitchell,
Jayden Wilson, Kellen
Grant, Gavin Hanna Rob-
inson and Derek Howard.
A balanced scoring at-
tack is led by Derek How-
ard who averages nine
points per game. Dakota
Howard, Ferguson and
Lehman all average seven
points for the team. Wilson
goes for six points a game
and Wilkins averages five.
Mitchell and Grant are scor-
ing four points a game at the
midway point. Gibbs and
Hanna Robinson haven’t
looked to be big scorers so
far this season. Gibbs is the
floor general who looks to
pass the ball to his team-
mates. Hanna Robinson
is the defensive stopper
who gets the assignment of
guarding the other team’s
best player. Burright just
joined the JV team last
weekend and exploded for
17 points in his first game
at Union.
It is a very talented
group of coachable young
men who certainly make
the future of the Mustang
basketball program look
very bright.
