A View from the Hill Chamber announces Ione FFA to host
By Doris Brosnan
The Community on the
Hill has greeted 2018 with
enthusiasm and wishes that
friends and family have
many reasons to do the
same.
One simple reason for
enthusiasm comes from the
special calendar days book-
let that manager George
Nairns and the staff search
every month for significant
and silly days to celebrate,
several of which offer trib-
utes to foods. A week ago,
chocolate-covered cher-
ries were held in high es-
teem, and the Terrace will
later celebrate by sharing
strawberry ice cream (14 th ),
Fig Newtons (16 th ), blonde
brownies (22 nd ) and choco-
late cake (27 th ), these in ad-
dition to their various other
desserts on the menus.
Morning discussions
are often stimulated by the
months’ designated special
days. Last week, on the 4 th ,
the tribute to the blender
(on the market since 1910)
and acknowledgment of
L. Braille’s birth in 1809
resulted in some kitchen
stories and comments on
the importance of braille.
Yesterday was Poetry at
Work Day, so some experi-
menting with poetry was
called for. Martin Luther
King, Jr., born in 1929,
will be discussed on the
15 th , Winnie the Pooh Day
on the 18 th may bring up
some memories and ap-
preciation of the invention
of the tin can in 1825 will
surely add to the discussion
on the 19 th . Everyone at the
Terrace must expect some
hugs on National Hugging
Day, the 21 st and readers are
encouraged to give out hugs
that day, too. A good belly
laugh supposedly burns up
six calories, so laughter will
be part of the exercise plan
on the 24 th , jokes galore will
be flying. Though winter
Olympics will entertain
next month, they will be
part of the morning discus-
sion on the 25 th , the day of
the first Olympics in 1924.
Anyone who has been in
the Rocky Mountain Na-
tional Park can contribute
to the topic on the 26 th , the
celebration of its opening
in 1915.
On the day of the NFL
Pro Bowl, the 28 th , the sun
room will be featuring TV
coverage and snacks. That
could be the day that the
Terrace begins sign-ups
on the betting board for
the next weekend’s Super
Bowl.
Puzzle Day on the 29 th
celebrates creators of puz-
zles and games, so several
residents will appreciate its
significance. Some rousing
times result throughout the
weeks when they gather for
bingo, crossword puzzles,
trivia, and brain games.
A recent example was the
Murder Mystery Logic puz-
zle that took contributions
from several participants to
solve. It was such a success
on Dec. 30, more such puz-
zles may be challenged and
some with invited guests
adding to the fun.
Ironically, the 29 th is
also designated Curmud-
geon Day in tribute to WC
Fields, who was born in
1880, so some discussion
may be about his movies.
But surely no curmudgeons
will be present at the several
gatherings at the Terrace
this month. One gathering
for positive personalities
may be on the 19 th , which is
Hat Day, a perfect day for
a tea party, if arrangements
go smoothly. Since the 12 th
is Hot Tea Day, plans may
start shaping up that day for
the follow-up related event
on the next Friday.
There was another spe-
cial day on the Hill, Bev
Norton celebrated her 91 st
birthday with her husband,
neighbors and family, hav-
ing one of her favorite meals
for the occasion. This is one
example of why the Ter-
race residents and staff can
view 2017 with some fond
memories and view the new
year as another opportunity
for some memory-building.
