Heppner/Ione wrestlers compete Mustang boys’ basketball team
in Muilenburg tournament

Heppner/Ione wrestlers
traveled to LaGrande last
weekend for the Muilen-
burg tournament. Twenty
teams with more than 300
wrestlers competed for a
Muilenburg Championship
buckle. The event started at
4 p.m. on Friday, wrapping
up at 11 p.m. Saturday’s
event started with weigh-in
at 8 a.m.

lace and Ethan Holmgren
represented Heppner/Ione
in the event.
The team will travel
to Milton-Freewater on
Saturday, Dec. 16 for the
McLoughlin (MacHi) In-
vitational.

Boardman city
council honors RHS
boys soccer champs
The Boardman City
Council presented the Riv-
erside High School soccer
team with certificates of
achievement during the
Dec. 5 city council meeting
for the team’s success in
bringing home the Oregon
Class 3A/2A/1A State Soc-
cer Championship. The
team played last month
against Catlin Gabel in
Hillsboro with a 4-1 victory.
The Heppner Mustang
boys’ basketball team split
their games at the Mustang
Kickoff Classic tourna-
ment held last weekend.
The Mustangs lost to the
McLoughlin Pioneers by
the score of 44-32 and then
came back to beat the Im-
bler Panthers 51-25.
In the game against
McLoughlin, Wyatt Stea-
gall led the team with ten
points, eight rebounds, two
assists and a blocked shot.
Hunter Nichols tallied sev-
en points, finished with four
rebounds and a steal. Alex
Lindsay had a good game
with five points and eight
rebounds. Trent Smith also
scored five points and had
five rebounds. Beau Wolt-
ers scored three points,
had three rebounds, two
assists and a steal. Jus-
tin McAninch had two
points, three rebounds and
two blocked shots. Coby
Dougherty and Logan Bur-
right didn’t score in the
game but they both had four
rebounds on the night.
Steagall once again led
the team in scoring against
Imbler with ten. He also
had three rebounds and
blocked five shots. Nichols
was next with eight points,
four rebounds, six assists
and four steals. Dougherty
finished with seven points,
an assist and three steals in
the game. Burright scored
six, had three rebounds,
an assist and three steals.
Trent Smith had five points,
one rebound, one assist and
three steals for the Mus-
tangs. Lindsay and Gibson
McCurry scored four points
each in the game. McCurry
also had a rebound and a
blocked shot. Tyler Carter

came back from illness
and scored four points, had
five rebounds, one assist
and one steal. McAninch
scored two points, had four
rebounds and eight big
blocked shots. Wolters fin-
ished with one point, five
rebounds and two steals.
This week, on Tuesday,
the Mustangs travel to Irri-
gon to take on the Knights.
The team then goes to Im-
bler on Friday for a rematch
with the Panthers. On Sat-
urday they host the Grant
Union Prospectors. They
then play a home game
against the Umatilla Vi-
kings on Monday, Dec. 18

and then travel to Echo on
Dec. 19 to play the Cougars.
Lady Mustangs win the weekend
Mayor Sandy Toms,
who was in attendance via
phone, apologized for not
being there in person for
the presentation, said how
proud Boardman was of the
team. Assistant Coach Jose
Duenas also expressed how
proud he was of the team
saying “big things come in
small packages.” This is the
second state title Riverside
High School Boys Soccer
Team has held.
