ACCIDENT
-Continued from PAGE ONE
side of the road. The
driver was led away in
handcuffs, straining to still
see his dead friend laying
across the hood of the van
he had been driving.
After the girls were
removed from the smashed
car on backboards and tak-
en away in the ambulance,
Sweeney’s Mortuary hearse
pulled up. They extracted
the deceased male from the
van, placed him in a body
bag on a gurney and loaded
him into the hearse, then
drove away. This was a very
serious and somber thing
to witness. For a group of
about 150 high school kids
that were observing, it was
very quiet.
Morrow County School
Resource Deputy, Cpl. Phil
Morris then spoke to the
group about the dangers of
drinking and driving, also
noting that the same thing
can happen with distracted
driving using cell phones.
A couple of people
spoke to the group about
their own experiences.
Community Counseling
had two counselors on
scene to assist if necessary
and each school had a coun-
selor present. Also on scene
were the principals of the
schools, numerous teachers
and staff and Sheriff Ken
Matlack.
The students involved
in the re-enactment vol-
unteered to participate but
were still encouraged to
speak with one of the many
counselors, teachers, EMS
workers or sheriff’s office
employees, if they needed
or wanted to speak with
someone about their expe-
rience. This invitation was
also extended to the stu-
dents observing. Cpl. Phil
Morris and Sgt. Ivy Zim-
merman contributed hard
work and organization for
this exercise, commenting
that if it saves one life, or
someone from injury, it is
worth all the work.
