The Heppner Mustang
volleyball team had a very
busy and successful week
of matches. The Mustangs
(15-7, 5-1) won two tough
conference matches and
then played two highly
ranked teams in the state
over the weekend.
The Mustangs trav-
eled to Culver to take on
the number one ranked
team in the state. They put
together some of their best
volleyball of the season and
knocked off the top-ranked
team 3-2.
The first set saw Cul-
ver come out fast and win
by the score of 25-12. The
Mustangs picked it up af-
ter the long bus ride and
stormed back to win the
next two sets 25-13, 28-26.
The Bulldogs then stormed
back to win the third 25-16
and force a fifth and decid-
ing set. Heppner was able
to grind out an 18-16 win in
the set to clinch the match.
Jacee Currin led the
team with ten kills. She also
had 12 digs and ten assists.
Morgan Correa contributed
nine kills and 21 digs while
Sydney Wilson had a team-
best of 27 digs. Sophie
Grant added 12 assists in
the match.
Heppner then traveled
to Pilot Rock for anoth-
er important conference
matchup. Again, the Mus-
tangs started slow and lost
the first set to the Rockets,
25-8. Heppner then pulled
it together and won the next
three sets and the match by
the scores of 25-21, 25-14
and 25-15. It was a total
team effort to be able to
get the win on this night.
After the quick defeat in the
first set, everyone picked it
up and played well in all
phases of the game. It was
an important victory as it
kept the Mustangs tied with
Culver for first place in the
conference.
Over the weekend the
Mustangs faced two other
highly ranked teams in the
state; the Kennedy Tro-
jans are the third ranked
team in the state and the St.
Paul Buckaroos are ranked
fourth. The teams all met
and played at Sherman
County High School.
Heppner couldn’t get
anything going in the early
morning match with St.
Paul and lost 25-22, 25-18,
25-16. They then played
the last match of the day
against Kennedy and won
the first set 25-20. Heppner
lost the final three sets and
the match by scores of 25-
23, 25-17, 25-18. It was
certainly a great test for
the Mustangs against really
good teams from the other
side of the state.
The Mustangs have two
more conference matches
left to play. They host the
Weston-McEwen Tiger-
scots on Thursday, Oct. 12
and then finish conference
play at the Stanfield Tigers
on Tuesday, Oct. 17.
