Mustang volleyball team takes
on Tigerscots and Tigers
The Heppner Mus-
tang volleyball team got
two big wins last week to
bring their overall record to
13-5 and 3-1 in conference
play. Heppner defeated the
Weston-McEwen Tiger-
scots in four sets by the
scores of 27-25, 16-25,
25-15, 25-23. They then
swept the Stanfield Tigers
25-13, 25-15, 25-12. The
Mustangs are currently the
7 th ranked OSAA 2A team
in the state and sit in second
place in the Columbia Basin
Conference.
In an exciting first
match against the Tiger-
scots, they set the tone for
a great night of high school
volleyball. It was a back
and forth set that saw the
Mustangs trail 19-18 before
they made a run to take
the lead. Weston-McEwen
battled back and the score
was tied at 24-24. It was
also tied up at 25-25 and the
set could have gone either
way. The Mustangs scored
the last two points to take
the win at 27-25.
Heppner started the
second set up five points,
but a few missed oppor-
tunities and the constant
hitting pressure from the
Tigerscots saw them take
the set 25-16. The third set
saw Heppner struggle and
trail early, they then rallied
to tie the score at 11-11.
From there on the Mustangs
took control and outscored
Weston-McEwen 15-4 to
win the set 25-15.
In the last set of the
evening, Heppner was
down 17-12 when they
caught fire and rallied to
tie the score 19-19. The set
looked as if it would be over
when the Mustangs took the
lead 21-19 and 22-20. They
then pushed the lead to 24-
20 and the Mustang fans
were cheering for the final
point and the win. A rally
by the Tigerscots pulled

them to within 24-23, but
the Mustangs got the final
point and won the exciting
set 25-23 and the match 3-1.
Heppner coach Mindy
Wilson said “This was a
battle till the end, neither
team was willing to give in.
We had some times that we
struggled, but we dug deep
as a team and fought for it.”
Morgan Correa led the
Mustangs with ten kills
and five blocks while Jacee
Currin led the team with 16
assists.
Heppner continued
their winning ways as they
swept the Stanfield Tigers
before a large crowd of fans
at home. They also had a
loud cheering section of
Mustang football players
rooting them on.
The Mustangs took
control of the match early
and never looked back.
They controlled the tempo
of the match and put the Ti-
gers away early in every set.
All of the Heppner players
got in to play in the match
and did very well.
Jenna McCullough had
a big night and finished with
five kills and two blocks.
Nicole Propheter also had
five kills on the night, but
it was Correa who led the
team with six. Correa also
had five serving aces in the
match.
The Mustangs have two
tough matches this week as
they travel to take on the top
ranked team in the state, the
Culver Bulldogs on Tues-
day and then visit the Pilot
Rock Rockets in another
important conference match
on Thursday.
