Clara C. “Belle”
Lillie
Clara C. “Belle” Lil-
lie, 82, of Mayville, died
Thursday, Sept. 14, 2017
at The Dalles. A graveside
memorial service will be
held on Saturday, Oct. 7
at 1 p.m. at the Heppner
Masonic Cemetery.
She was born Nov. 23,
1934 at Baker City, OR
the daughter of Albert and
Elsie Demint Carpenter.
She lived in Grants Pass,
Eugene, Springfield, and
Portland. She came to Hep-
pner in 1977 and worked in
the restaurant and lounge
businesses in Heppner and
Ione. It was in Heppner that
she met and married Keith
A. Lillie, they were mar-
ried for over 30 years. The
couple retired and made
their home on the family
ranch in Mayville. Two of
Belle’s favorite things were
camping and fishing.
She is survived by
her husband Keith Lillie
of Mayville, sons, Farrell
Griggs of Umatilla, Boyce
Shepperson of Myrtle
Creek, OR, 11 grandchil-
dren and four great-grand-
children.
Memorial contributions
may be made to the donor’s
charity of choice.

Ladies fun day held Scholarships,
at Willow Creek

Country Club
Prayers at WCCC
Twenty-one members
played in a three-person
scramble at the WCCC
Ladies end of the year fun
day on Tuesday, Sept. 26th.
First place was a tie be-
tween the team of Beverly
Steagall, Tiffany Clement,
and Nancy Propheter and
the team of Jackie Allstott,
Virginia Grant and Karen
Haguewood. Second place
team went to Judy Harris,
Corol Mitchell, and Jeannie
Creswick. The third place
team consisted of Mary
Riggs, Pat Edmundson and
Pat Dougherty.
Lunch was served and
the bi-annual meeting was
held along with drawings
for door prizes.
Yearly awards were
announced and prizes were
awarded to Virginia Grant,
WCCC Lady Champion
for the tournament that was
held in July; Eddi Skow
Ladies net tournament first
place was Virginia Grant,
second went to Betty Burns
and third to Nancy Prophet-
er; Eclectic Board winners
were first Jeannie Creswick
and second Eva Kilkenny.
Most birdies for the year
went to Nancy Propheter
with 12 and Virginia Grant
with five. Most chip-ins
was a 4-way tie between
Pat Edmundson, Karen
Haguewood, Judy Harris
and Nancy Propheter.
Ladies will golf on
Tuesday mornings at 9:00
a.m. through October,
weather permitting, no
hostess.
First Friday Friends
of Jesus this week
The next session of First
Friday Friends of Jesus is com-
ing up this Friday, Oct. 6. Kids
in the community ages four
through sixth grade are invited
to a morning filled with Bible
stories, games and crafts. The
fun begins at 8:30 a.m. at the
All Saints parish hall (corner
of Church and Gale in Hep-
pner) and concludes at 12:30
p.m. A free lunch is served and
there is no cost to attend.
Newcomers are always

Catholic student scholarships benefit from golf fun day.

Twenty-five people
participated in the St. Wil-
liam’s and St. Patrick’s
Holy Name Men’s groups’
seventh annual golf fun day
on Saturday, Aug. 15 th at the
Willow Creek Country Club
in Heppner. Tom and Karen
Wolff organized the four-
person, nine-hole scramble
that was full of laughs,
fun and shenanigans. Mul-
ligans, Hail Marys, Our
Fathers and new this year,
Throws added to the excite-
ment.
Prizes were given for
longest drive to Jim Swan-
son and Lana Eckman;
least putts to Gene Orwick
and Pat Dougherty; KP to
Rick Johnston and Melissa
Coiner and most lost balls
to Arlene Way.
Members of the first
place team were Rick John-
ston, Father Kumar, Larry
Lutcher and Father Condon.
Second place team was
Lana Eckman, Ken Eck-
man, Tim Wright and Leann
Wright.
Most family members
prize went to the Josh and
Melissa Coiner family and
Leanne and Joe Lindsay.
Proceeds from this
event go to the Catholic
student scholarships.
Lunch was served by
the St. Patrick’s Altar So-
ciety.
Chamber lunch
The next lunch meeting
of the Heppner Chamber of
Commerce will be at noon
on Thursday, Oct. 5, in Hep-
pner City Hall conference
room and will be all entities
report.
Cost of lunch is $10;
Heppner Market Fresh will
cater with French dip sand-
wiches, green salad and
dessert. Chamber lunch at-
tendees are asked to RSVP

WCPD to meet
Willow Creek Parks District will be holding a meet-
ing at noon on Oct. 6 th at the Heppner City Hall, 111 N
Main St., Heppner.
The City needs your Help in updating the
plan for Heppner’s Transportation System.
All aspects of transportation need to be
considered such as sidewalks, bicycle and
hiking paths, streets, bridges, handicap
accessibility and more.

Harvest Festival this
Saturday
The fourth annual Mor-
row County Harvest Festi-
val is coming to the SAGE
Center at 101 Olson Road
in Boardman on Saturday,
Oct. 7, from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m.
This event is presented by
the Boardman, Heppner,
and Irrigon chambers of
commerce in conjunction
with the SAGE Center.
The Morrow County
Harvest Festival will fea-
ture a variety of vendors
with handcrafted home-
made items. The kids’ cor-
ner will include carnival
games, pumpkin painting,
straw bale obstacle course
and a kiddie corral.
Mule-drawn wagon
rides will be available from
10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Beer and
wine tasting will be avail-
able from 12 p.m. to 4:30
p.m courtesy of local pro-
ducers Ordnance Brewing
and Sno Road Winery.
New this year, Three-
mile Canyon Farm’s Fall
Harvest Bounty For Youth
In Ag event will provide an
opportunity for “fill-a-bag”
with organic onions, or-
ganic carrots and tradition-
ally grown potatoes, for a
minimum $5 donation. This
is a chance to get nutritious,
locally grown produce fresh
from the Threemile Can-
yon fields and support area
youth, with all proceeds
going to local 4H and FFA
programs.
The activities at Mor-
row County Harvest Fes-
tival are free to the public.
Event sponsors include
Threemile Canyon Farms,
the Kiwanis Club of Board-
man, Lamb Weston, Cas-
cade Specialties, and the
River Lodge and Grill.

Maggie Collins,
Makenzi Hughes and Paige
Grieb have been selected
by the board of the South
Morrow County Scholar-
ship Trust, on behalf of the
Beth Slottee Scholarship
Fund, as the recipients of
the 2017 scholarship. These
students will receive $500
each and were selected
on the basis of academic
achievement, chosen field
of study, and financial need.
The scholarship is available
to students entering their
junior or senior year in high
school or graduate school at
an accredited college. The
student must be majoring
or minoring in music, but if
no applicants are available,
it may be awarded to a stu-
dent majoring or minoring
in education.
Maggie Collins is
the daughter of Tim and
Jeannie Collins of Hep-
pner. She is enrolled at
Oregon State University in
the Agriculture Education
Master’s program. Maggie
has maintained high marks
during her years at OSU.
During college, she joined
the Ag Ed Club and volun-
teered at an alternative high
school to develop skills in
classroom management and
other techniques to help
high needs students. She is
currently student teaching
in La Grande, OR.
Paige Grieb is the
daughter of Ken and Carri
Grieb of Lexington. She is
entering her third year at
the University of Oregon
and studying Elementary
Education with a minor in
Spanish. She was able to
study abroad this summer to
immerse herself in the cul-
ture as well as the language.
Paige has maintained high
marks in her first two years
at UO.
Makenzi Hughes is the
daughter of Kevin and An-
gie Hughes of Heppner.
She received an associate’s
degree from Blue Moun-
tain Community College
and has enrolled at Eastern
Oregon University taking
courses through Oregon
State University, pursuing a
degree in Agriculture Edu-
cation. She has maintained
high marks during her years
at BMCC. As a teacher,
Makenzi plans to help stu-
dents through FFA and Ag
classes develop skills that
they will use on a daily
basis in the real world and
set goals to work towards.
The board of directors

Karen Holland. The Beth
Slottee Scholarship was
combined with The South
Morrow County Schol-
arship Trust, Inc several
years ago with the mission
to provide scholarships for
students from the Heppner,
Lexington and Ione com-

Nazarene volunteers will serve lunch on Wednesday,
Oct. 11, at St. Patrick’s Senior Center. Lunch will include
goulash, mixed vegetables, broccoli salad, garlic bread
and raspberry mousse for dessert.
Milk is served at each meal. Suggested donation is
$3.50 per meal. Menu is subject to change.
