After a long week of
homecoming activities, the
Heppner Mustang foot-
ball team beat the Toledo
Boomers 46-6 for their first
win of the season. The team
looked sharp and focused as
they took it to the Boomers
from the start of the game.
Heppner kicked off and
quickly forced a Toledo
punt. It only took three
plays for the Mustangs to
score as Coby Dougherty
ran it in from 6 yards out.
Dougherty then ran in the
two-point conversion to
give the Mustangs a 8-0
lead.
The next Mustang score
came as Beau Wolters took
the ball and blasted through
a small hole in the line. He
kept his legs moving and
dragged several Boomer
defenders into the end zone
for a touchdown. Wolters
then caught a pass from
quarterback Jayden Wilson
to score the two-point con-
version to make it 16-0.
Heppner would score
one more time in the first

dropped back and found
Logan Burright open over
the middle. Burright hauled
the pass in and scored from
24 yards out. The Mus-
tangs scored the two-point
conversion when Wilson
completed a pass to Peyton
Lehman. That made the
score at the end of the first
quarter 24-0.
The Mustangs would
score two times in the sec-
ond quarter. The first came
as Gavin Hanna Robinson
carried the ball in from 6
yards out. The two-point
conversion try was success-
ful as Wilson once again
found Lehman open and hit
him with a pass. The second
score of the quarter would
be another 6 yard run, this
time by Dougherty. The
conversion try failed and
Heppner led at halftime by
the score of 38-0.
Toledo kicked off to
start the second half. The
Mustangs moved the ball on
a nine play drive that ended
in a touchdown when Wil-
son carried the ball in from
1 yard out. Wilson then ran
the ball in for the two-point
conversion. That made the
score 46-0. Toledo scored
their only touchdown late
in the third quarter. That
made the final score of the
game 46-6.
The Mustangs had 274
total yards for the game
compared to only 123 for
the Boomers.
Dougherty led the team
in rushing with 128 yards
on 15 attempts. Hanna Rob-
inson was next with 38
yards, Wolters finished with
32 and Wilson 17.
Wilson was 7-15 pass-
ing the ball for 70 yards.
He had 1 touchdown pass
and 1 interception. Wolt-
ers caught 2 passes for 32
yards, Burright had 1 catch
for 24 yards and a touch-
down. Hanna Robinson had
3 catches for 12 yards and
Lehman had a catch for 5.
The defensive effort
was led by Tyler Carter who
had 7 tackles on the night.
Hanna Robinson was next
with 6 and Dougherty, Zach
Bredfield and Jason Rea
finished with 5 each. Wolt-
ers, Wilson, Wyatt Steagall
and Derek Howard had 4
tackles each in the game
while Lehman, Keegan
Gibbs, Dakota Howard and
Matt Orem recorded 3 each.
Burright had 2 tackles for
the Mustangs.
Heppner will start Blue
Mountain Conference play
this Friday night as they
travel to Athena to take
on the Weston-McEwen
Tigerscots.

Mustang volleyball
team plays well

against Pilot Rock on September 19. -Photo by Kirsti Cason
The Heppner Mustang
volleyball team split their
first two conference match-
es last week. Heppner fell
to the Culver Bulldogs in
three sets 25-13, 25-18,
25-12 but then defeated the
Pilot Rock Rockets in three
sets by the scores of 25-5,
25-21, 26-24.
Against the always
tough Bulldogs, Heppner
played well and had many
long rallies with the Bull-
dogs but just came up short
on the scoreboard. Culver's
strong serving, floor cover-
age and power were just too
much for the Mustangs on
this night. Coach Mindy
Wilson stated “It was a
good test for our first con-
ference game and showed
us what we need to work
on for the future.”
The Rockets then came
to town and the Mustangs
had something to prove.
The team came out fast
in the first set and stayed
strong the rest of the way
in the very exciting match.
The Mustangs were even
down by 6 points in the
third set and came back to
win it and the match.
Nicole Propheter led
the team in kills with 10.
Morgan Correa and Jacee
Currin were next with 8
kills each. Sophie Grant had
19 assists for the night and
Currin 13. Sydney Wilson
had 28 digs for the Mus-
tangs.
This week the Mus-
tangs have two more con-
ference matches. On Tues-
day they travel to Athena to
take on the Weston-McE-
wen Tigersots and then on
Thursday they will host the
Stanfield Tigers.
