Greg Grant receives Mustang golf sweeps districts
state award

The Cardinal track and
Special District 3 Champi-
onships last Saturday, May
13, at Sherman County Jr/
Sr High School in Moro.
Ione men walked away
with eighth place out of the
field of 10, while the Lady
Cards took sixth. Two Ione
athletes placed second in
their district events to earn
a slot at the state champion-
ship, Hayden Qualls in the
3000 Meter and Macken-
zie Heideman in the 1500
Meter.
In addition, three Ione
athletes finish the season
in the top 10 of the 1A
rankings for their events.
Sophomore Hayden Qualls
ranks ninth in the state for
the 1500 Meters (4:35.25
PR) and 3000 Meters
(10:03.68 PR), sophomore
Laura Ayala ranks ninth in
the 100m hurdles (18.35
PR) and senior Cord Flynn
ranks seventh in Javelin
(154’ 8 PR).
The state track meet is
coming up this Thursday
and Friday at Hayward
Field at the University of
Oregon in Eugene.
Heppner Results
The Heppner Mustang
golf program took care of
business over the two days
of the district golf tourna-
ment and came home with
both the girls’ and boys’
team titles. The champion-
ship tournament was held
at Pendleton Country Club
and featured 43 girl golfers
and 52 boys from all over
eastern Oregon.
The Heppner girls’
team shot an impressive
730 total for the two days
to get the title. They bested
second-place La Grande
by 135 stokes as they shot
an 865. Other team scores
were Burns (886), Ontario
(957), Vale (1008), Grant
Union (1019) and Nyssa
qualified for state.
Sophie Grant led the
team with a two-day total
of 164 to finish as the third-
place medalist at the tourna-
ment. Amanda Rea shot a
182 to finish fourth overall
and Nicole Propheter was
the fifth-place medalist with
a 187. Madison Combe
finished with a total of 198
while Caitlyn Scrivner and
Claire Grieb combined for
a total of 211.
Other schools repre-
sented in the girls’ tourna-
ment were Imbler, Nixy-
aawii, Baker, Enterprise,
Mac-Hi and Wallowa.
In the boys’ tourna-
ment, Heppner took a
day into day two action and
stretched it out to 28 strokes
to get the title over La Pine.
The Mustangs shot 698
while La Pine finished with
a 726. The rest of the team
scores were Burns (756),
Enterprise (761), Nixyaawii
(788), Imbler (831), Vale
(844), Nyssa (886), Echo
(937) and Grant Union
(1038). The top four teams
from the boys’ tournament
qualified to go to the state
tournament.
Logan Grieb finished
as the second-place medal-
ist overall by shooting a
two-day total of 163. Dan
Bretsch shot a 169 to finish
as the fifth-place medalist
Heppner scores were Kel-
len Grant (175), Jake Lind-
say (200) and Logan Bur-
right (201). Reno Ferguson
golfed as an alternate at the
tournament.
Other schools that had
players there were Adrian,
Cove and Wallowa.
The Heppner girls’
team traveled this week to
Trysting Tree Golf Club in
Corvallis to participate in
the OSAA 4A/3A/2A/1A
State Golf Championship
tournament. The Mustang
boys’ team competed in
the OSAA 3A/2A/1A tour-
nament, held in Redmond
at the Eagle Crest Resort
Ridge Course.
