“I want to see integra-
tion,” Neal says, “between
the needs of the industries
and what the schools are
doing.” To that end, the
Port has just recently cre-
ated a new position called
the Workforce Develop-
ment Coordinator, whose
job it will be to serve as
a liaison between the Port
of Morrow industries and
educators such as BMCC,
InterMountain Education
Service District, and Mor-
row County and Ione school
districts.
According to the job
description the main pur-
pose of the coordinator “is
to connect Morrow County
employers and residents
with programs and services,
especially those opportuni-
ties leading to employment
in local industry, acting as
a clearing house for work-
force training and develop
programs.” The Port is now
advertising for the position
and hopes to have someone
on board soon.
“We need someone to
sure the schools and indus-
try are communicating,”
Neal says of the new posi-
tion. “We need someone to
shepherd the process.”
Gary’s wife Kathy is
also involved with educa-
tion in Morrow County,
serving on the education
service district, and on the
local Morrow County Edu-
cation Foundation, which
receives funds, mainly from
the Columbia River En-
terprise Zone, to spend on
better education in Morrow
County.
The citizens of Morrow
County are also committed
and behind more train-
school’s certification pre-
pares workers for the jobs
there. “A data center tech-
nician installs, maintains
and repairs a data center’s
computer and network sys-
tems. Students completing
this one-year certificate are
fully prepared for employ-
ment in this rapidly grow-
ing industry,” the colleges
description states.
When asked to predict
where he sees the Port of
Morrow going in the future
with respect to industry and
job creation: “More of the
same,” Neal says without
hesitation. “Energy, data
and natural resources.”

the Port are included in the
college’s Industrial Systems
Technology program. This
program, according to the
college, will teach students
to “troubleshoot, maintain
and repair industrial sys-
tems, analyze technical
data, promote energy ef-
ficiency and industrial sus-
tainability and contribute
to a positive professional
workplace culture.”
Another program of-
fered by BMCC will be
the Data Center Techni-
cian (CC) certification.
Amazon has constructed
several large data farms at
for their local students. In
2015 the voters stepped
up and approved a bond
issue for BMCC to build a
workforce training center
in Boardman. This training
center has been built and
will hold its grand open-
ing this Thursday from 4-6
p.m. The new training cen-
ter will provide job skills
workshops, college pre-
paratory classes for adults
and customized training
for business and industry.
It will also have an early
learning center to get the
very young kids prepared
to start school.
