Remember
‘5 to Drive’
during
Distracted
Driving
Awareness
month
April has been desig-
nated Distracted Driving
Awareness month, and the
Heppner High School stu-
dent council recently spon-
sored a campaign for the
entire student body to bring
awareness to this issue. An-
drea Fletcher of the Com-
munity Health Improve-
ment Partnership (CHIP)
of Morrow County says
distracted driving statistics
are “extremely alarming.”
“It will take more than
information sharing to ad-
dress the issue but the stu-
dents took a bold step in
starting the conversation,”
she says.
In light of the serious-
ness of the issue, CHIP
also would like to remind
parents and teens of the “5
to Drive” rules for teenage
driving:
1. No drinking and
driving—Drinking before
the age of 21 is illegal, and
alcohol and driving should
never mix no matter your
age.
2. Buckle up. Every
trip. Every time. Front seat
and back—It’s important to
buckle up on every trip, no
matter how far or how fast.
3. Put it down. One
text or call could wreck it
all—There is great danger
to yourself and others if
distracted, texting or dialing
while driving—devices are
off-limits when you are on
the road. In Oregon, it is il-
legal for drivers under age
18 to use any kind of wire-
less communication device
while driving, including
hands-free devices.
4. Stop speeding be-
fore it stops you—Drive
the speed limit. Every time
your speed doubles, your
stopping distance quadru-
ples.
5. No more than one
passenger at any time—
With each passenger in the
vehicle, a teen’s risk of a fa-
tal crash increases. Oregon
uses a multi-stage licensing
process for teens—under-
stand your responsibilities.
