Heppner Gazette-Times, Heppner, Oregon Wednesday, February 15, 2017 Mustangs secure second seed at districts The Heppner Mustang boys’ basketball team won its final regular season Blue Mountain Conference game in convincing fashion by defeating the Culver Bull- dogs by the score of 59-35 on Monday night. With the win, the Mustangs secured the second seed into the BMC District playoffs this weekend. Heppner (12- 6,4-4) will play this Fri- day night at the Pendleton Convention Center against a yet-to-be-determined op- ponent. Game time is set for 7:45 p.m. Leading up to Mon- days game, the Mustangs beat the Weston-McEwen TigerScots 73-53 on Senior Night last week. The five seniors, Kolby Currin, Lo- gan Grieb, Caden Hedman, Jake Lindsay and Kevin Murray, were honored be- fore the game for their years of service to the basketball program. They have been playing together since the third grade and have had a tremendous amount of suc- cess on the court. The five seniors start- ed the game together and er combinations on the floor for the Mustangs. Many of the younger players got sig- nificant time in the quarter. Near the end of the game all five of the seniors were on the floor playing. With just under two minutes left to play, they all came out of the game together to a loud ovation from the crowd. The Mustangs went on to win the game by the score of 73-53. Logan Grieb led all scorers with 22 points. He also had 12 rebounds, 6 assists and 2 steals in the game. Jake Lindsay was next with 14 points, 4 as- sists, 2 rebounds and 3 steals for the team. Ca- den Hedman scored 12 points and had 1 rebound and 1 assist. Kevin Smith finished with 10 points, 3 rebounds and 1 assist for the Mustangs. Kevin Murray and Wyatt Steagall scored 4 points each. Mur- ray also had 6 rebounds while Steagall finished with 2 rebounds, 2 steals and 2 blocked shots. The Mustangs put on a defensive clinic as they led 17-4 at the end of the first quarter. A high-scoring second quarter completely put the game out of reach. Heppner outscored the Ti- gerScots 24-15 to take a 41-19 lead into the locker room. The Mustangs contin- ued to dominate the game and led after the third quar- ter 64-33. The fourth quar- ter saw many different play- assist and 1 rebound. With 2 points each were Kolby Currin and Alex Lindsay. Currin also had 2 rebounds and Lindsay recorded 1 rebound and 1 steal. Beau Wolters had a steal in the game and Coby Dougherty a rebound. The team then traveled to Pilot Rock and lost a close one to the Rockets by the score of 45-42. Hep- pner had a lead at the end of the first quarter 15-11. A close second quarter saw the Mustangs only outscore the Rockets 10-9. That made the halftime score 25- 20 in favor of the Mustangs. Another close quarter in third saw the Mustangs take a 36-32 lead into the final quarter of play. Hep- pner struggled to score and the Rockets tied the game at 42-42 with under a minute left to play in the game. A Mustang turnover gave the Rockets the ball back with 10 seconds left in the game. They inbounded the ball and hit a tough three- point shot to win the game at the buzzer by the score of 45-42. Grieb once again led the team with 12 points, 3 rebounds, 2 assists and 1 steal. Jake Lindsay finished with 9 points, 2 rebounds and 1 assist. Murray had 7 points and 8 rebounds in a strong performance. Hed- man and Smith finished with 6 points each. Hedman also had 2 assists, 1 rebound and 2 steals for the team while Smith hauled down 8 rebounds. Steagall had 2 points, 2 rebounds and a blocked shot on the night. Currin and Dias Martins both played and recorded a rebound each. After the long bus trip to Culver Monday night, the Mustangs started the game off fast and never looked back. The Mustangs jumped out to a quick 18-7 lead at the end of the first quarter. They continued to put the pressure on Culver and led at halftime by the score of 33-19. A little let-down by the Mustangs in the third quar- ter saw both teams score 12 points and Heppner take a 45-31 lead into the final stanza. The Mustangs clamped down defensively in the fourth quarter and only let the Bulldogs score four points while putting up 14 points themselves. That made the final score of the game 59-35 in favor of the Mustangs. Logan Grieb had a big night in his final regular season game. He scored 29 points, hauled down 9 rebounds and had 2 steals. Jake Lindsay had a good all-around game as he scored 8 points and had 2 rebounds, 2 assists and a steal. Nikolas Dias Martins scored 5 points and had 3 rebounds for the team. Ca- den Hedman had 4 points, 1 assist and a steal for the Mustangs. Wyatt Steagall scored 3 points and had 1 rebound while Alex Lind- say chipped in 2 points and 1 rebound on the night. Kevin Murray also scored 2 points and ripped down 8 rebounds, and also had a steal for the team. Also scoring 2 points in the game were Beau Wolters, Gibson McCurry and Hunter Nich- ols. Wolters also recorded 3 rebounds and McCurry had 2. Kevin Smith had 3 rebounds, 1 assist and 1 blocked shot for the team. Kolby Currin started the game and had 2 rebounds and played some great de- fense in the game. Coby Dougherty also played and had a steal for the team. The Mus- tangs finish the season with a 7-11 record overall and were 2-6 in Blue Mountain Conference play. This action-packed game was close through- out and had all the fans in the building involved and cheering wildly the entire game. A close first quarter saw the Mustangs take a 14-13 lead. A big scor- ing second quarter by the Mustangs, in which they recorded 17 points, saw them stretch the lead to 31- 24 at halftime. The Mustangs were outscored 9-7 in the third quarter but still led the game 38-33. Culver cut the lead to just two points several times in the fourth quarter but the Mustangs would not give up the lead. Heppner made several big free-throws down the stretch to secure the win by the score of 47-44. Jacee Currin led the team in scoring with 13. Riane Dompier and Morgan Correa each scored 9 points in the game and Jaiden Mahoney finished with 7. Kacie Gray had 6 points and Madison Combe 3. It was a great way for the Mustangs to finish the season and look forward to next year. The team only loses two seniors in Emily Cecil and Riane Dompier. They return everyone else, which certainly makes the future look bright for the Mustang girls’ basketball program. The Heppner/Ione wrestling team competed in Halfway at the Pine Ea- gle Invitational. Fourteen teams were in attendance from Oregon and Idaho. The Mustangs finished eighth in the team stand- ings. The Mustangs had one individual champion, two third-place winners, two consolation bracket cham- pions and a sixth-place finisher. Cord Flynn continued his string of championships with a gold medal at 195 pounds. Flynn is currently sitting in the first seed posi- tion at districts and state for 2A/1A at 195 pounds. Trevor Antonucci (106 pounds) and Carson Bros- nan (138 pounds) both placed third at their weight classes. Finishing as consola- tion bracket champions and fifth place winners were Leo Waite (126 pounds) and Zach Bredfield (145 pounds). Charles Cason finished the tournament in sixth place. Heppner/Ione will be hosting the OSAA 2A/1A Special District 4 district championship tournament next Friday in Hermiston at Armand Larive middle school. Ticket prices are $6 for adults and $4 for students.
