Mustangs secure second seed at districts
The Heppner Mustang
boys’ basketball team won
its final regular season Blue
Mountain Conference game
in convincing fashion by
defeating the Culver Bull-
dogs by the score of 59-35
on Monday night. With the
win, the Mustangs secured
the second seed into the
BMC District playoffs this
weekend. Heppner (12-
6,4-4) will play this Fri-
day night at the Pendleton
Convention Center against
a yet-to-be-determined op-
ponent. Game time is set for
7:45 p.m.
Leading up to Mon-
days game, the Mustangs
beat the Weston-McEwen
TigerScots 73-53 on Senior
Night last week. The five
seniors, Kolby Currin, Lo-
gan Grieb, Caden Hedman,
Jake Lindsay and Kevin
Murray, were honored be-
fore the game for their years
of service to the basketball
program. They have been
playing together since the
third grade and have had a
tremendous amount of suc-
cess on the court.
The five seniors start-
ed the game together and
er combinations on the floor
for the Mustangs. Many of
the younger players got sig-
nificant time in the quarter.
Near the end of the game
all five of the seniors were
on the floor playing. With
just under two minutes left
to play, they all came out of
the game together to a loud
ovation from the crowd.
The Mustangs went on to
win the game by the score
of 73-53.
Logan Grieb led all
scorers with 22 points. He
also had 12 rebounds, 6
assists and 2 steals in the
game. Jake Lindsay was
next with 14 points, 4 as-
sists, 2 rebounds and 3
steals for the team. Ca-
den Hedman scored 12
points and had 1 rebound
and 1 assist. Kevin Smith
finished with 10 points,
3 rebounds and 1 assist
for the Mustangs. Kevin
Murray and Wyatt Steagall
scored 4 points each. Mur-
ray also had 6 rebounds
while Steagall finished with
2 rebounds, 2 steals and
2 blocked shots. Nikolas
Dias Martins played well
and had 3 points, 2 steals, 1

jumped out to a quick lead
that they wouldn’t give
up. The Mustangs put on
a defensive clinic as they
led 17-4 at the end of the
first quarter. A high-scoring
second quarter completely
put the game out of reach.
Heppner outscored the Ti-
gerScots 24-15 to take a
41-19 lead into the locker
room.
The Mustangs contin-
ued to dominate the game
and led after the third quar-
ter 64-33. The fourth quar-
ter saw many different play-
assist and 1 rebound. With
2 points each were Kolby
Currin and Alex Lindsay.
Currin also had 2 rebounds
and Lindsay recorded 1
rebound and 1 steal. Beau
Wolters had a steal in the
game and Coby Dougherty
a rebound.
The team then traveled
to Pilot Rock and lost a
close one to the Rockets
by the score of 45-42. It
seems that over the years
the “Rock Pit” has been a
tough place for the Mus-
tangs to play and this year

would be no different. Hep-
pner had a lead at the end
of the first quarter 15-11.
A close second quarter saw
the Mustangs only outscore
the Rockets 10-9. That
made the halftime score 25-
20 in favor of the Mustangs.
Another close quarter
in third saw the Mustangs
take a 36-32 lead into the
final quarter of play. Hep-
pner struggled to score and
the Rockets tied the game at
42-42 with under a minute
left to play in the game.
A Mustang turnover gave
the Rockets the ball back
with 10 seconds left in the
game. They inbounded the
ball and hit a tough three-
point shot to win the game
at the buzzer by the score
of 45-42.
Grieb once again led
the team with 12 points, 3
rebounds, 2 assists and 1
steal. Jake Lindsay finished
with 9 points, 2 rebounds
and 1 assist. Murray had 7
points and 8 rebounds in a
strong performance. Hed-
man and Smith finished
with 6 points each. Hedman
also had 2 assists, 1 rebound
and 2 steals for the team
while Smith hauled down
8 rebounds. Steagall had
2 points, 2 rebounds and a
blocked shot on the night.
Currin and Dias Martins
both played and recorded a
rebound each.
After the long bus trip
to Culver Monday night,
the Mustangs started the
game off fast and never
looked back. The Mustangs
jumped out to a quick 18-7
lead at the end of the first
quarter. They continued to
put the pressure on Culver
and led at halftime by the
score of 33-19.
A little let-down by the
Mustangs in the third quar-
ter saw both teams score
12 points and Heppner
take a 45-31 lead into the
final stanza. The Mustangs
clamped down defensively
in the fourth quarter and
only let the Bulldogs score
four points while putting up
14 points themselves. That
made the final score of the
game 59-35 in favor of the
Mustangs.
Logan Grieb had a big
night in his final regular
season game. He scored
29 points, hauled down 9
rebounds and had 2 steals.
Jake Lindsay had a good
all-around game as he
scored 8 points and had 2
rebounds, 2 assists and a
steal. Nikolas Dias Martins
scored 5 points and had 3
rebounds for the team. Ca-
den Hedman had 4 points,
1 assist and a steal for the
Mustangs. Wyatt Steagall
scored 3 points and had 1
rebound while Alex Lind-
say chipped in 2 points and
1 rebound on the night.
Kevin Murray also scored
2 points and ripped down
8 rebounds, and also had
a steal for the team. Also
scoring 2 points in the game
were Beau Wolters, Gibson
McCurry and Hunter Nich-
ols. Wolters also recorded
3 rebounds and McCurry
had 2. Kevin Smith had 3
rebounds, 1 assist and 1
blocked shot for the team.
Kolby Currin started the
game and had 2 rebounds
and played some great de-
fense in the game. Coby
Dougherty also played and
had a steal for the team.

The Heppner Mustang
girls’ basketball team won
its final game of the season
by defeating the Culver
Bulldogs 47-44. The Mus-
tangs finish the season with
a 7-11 record overall and
were 2-6 in Blue Mountain
Conference play.
This action-packed
game was close through-
out and had all the fans in
the building involved and
cheering wildly the entire
game. A close first quarter
saw the Mustangs take a
14-13 lead. A big scor-
ing second quarter by the
Mustangs, in which they
recorded 17 points, saw
them stretch the lead to 31-
24 at halftime.
The Mustangs were
outscored 9-7 in the third
quarter but still led the
game 38-33. Culver cut
the lead to just two points
several times in the fourth
quarter but the Mustangs
would not give up the lead.
Heppner made several
big free-throws down the
stretch to secure the win by
the score of 47-44.
Jacee Currin led the
team in scoring with 13.
Riane Dompier and Morgan
Correa each scored 9 points
in the game and Jaiden
Mahoney finished with 7.
Kacie Gray had 6 points and
Madison Combe 3.
It was a great way for
the Mustangs to finish the
season and look forward to
next year. The team only
loses two seniors in Emily
Cecil and Riane Dompier.
They return everyone else,
which certainly makes the
future look bright for the
Mustang girls’ basketball
program.
