Mustangs show well in weight classes
in home tournament

The Heppner/Ione
wrestling team had a rare
home appearance on Satur-
day, wrestling in the Bank
of Eastern Oregon Invita-
tional in Heppner.
Of the 16 teams sched-
uled to compete, 11 braved
the weather and made it to
the ninth annual tourna-
ment, bringing a total of 111
wrestlers into the brackets.
Two Mustangs earned
their way to the finals match
under the light on Saturday
evening and two other Mus-
tangs placed in the top four
of their weight class.

fought back after falling
behind early in the semi-
finals to win by pin over
a Riverside opponent. He
was defeated in the cham-
pionship bout by a Baker
wrestler and settled for a
silver medal.
Cord Flynn easily won
his way to the champion-
ship bout and found little
resistance there as he won
by an 18-3 technical fall.
Flynn not only won the
gold medal but was also
awarded the tournament
Outstanding Wrestler tro-
phy by vote of the coaches.
Leo Waite went 2-1 for
the tournament and finished
with a bronze medal and
third place. His two wins
were by fall over Baker and
Enterprise opponents.
Zach Bredfield finished
fourth at 145 pounds; he
made it to the semi-finals
before suffering his first
loss.
Cord Flynn won the champi-
onship for his weight class at
the BEO tournament and was
also voted Outstanding Wres-
tler for the tournament by the

DA’s Report
Morrow County Dis-
trict Attorney Justin Nelson
has released the following
report:
-David Brian Taylor,
50, was convicted of Fail-
ure to Appear I, a Class A
Misdemeanor. Execution of
180 days jail time was sus-
pended and the defendant
sentenced to 24 months
bench probation, to include
20 hours of community
service. Fines, fees and as-
sessments totaled $350.
-Ty Cody Davies, 24,
was convicted of Burglary
I, a Class A Felony. In ad-
dition to 18 months prison
time, with credit for time
served and to run concurrent
with the following count,
and three years’ post-prison
supervision, the defendant
is required to submit a writ-
ten letter of apology to the
victim through the Morrow
County DA’s office, have no
contact with any of the vic-
tims, obtain a mental health
evaluation, participate in
substance abuse evalua-
tion. Additionally, Davies
was convicted of Burglary
II, a Class C Felony. The
defendant was sentenced to
18 months prison time, with
credit for time served and to
run concurrent with the pre-
vious count, and one year
post-prison supervision.
Other requirements are the
same a above. Additional
counts dismissed were Bur-
glary II, Unlawful Entry
into a Motor Vehicle (x14),
Theft II (x6), Theft III (x2)
and Criminal Trespass II.
Fines, fees and assessments
totaled $400.

Ione, Heppner FFA
students earn
highest accolades
Four members of the
Heppner FFA Chapter and
three members of the Ione
FFA Chapter will earn their
State FFA degrees at the
state convention in March.
This is the highest award
members can receive in the
state organization. Ethan
Akers, Logan Grieb, Jake
Lindsay and Alex Lindsay
from Heppner, and Morgan
Orem, Ivy Sandford and
Emily Taylor from Ione
FFA have worked hard for
this highest honor.
The state degree re-
cipients earn a charm that
can be worn on the official
jacket or on a gold chain.
The requirements for
the Oregon FFA State De-
gree are stringent, and in-
clude:
-Have received the
Chapter FFA Degree;
-Have been an active
FFA member for at least
two years;
-Have completed the
equivalent of at least 360
hours of systematic school
instruction in agricultural
education at or above the
ninth-grade level, which
includes a supervised agri-
cultural experience;
-Have earned and pro-
ductively invested at least
$1,500 or worked at least
900 hours in excess of
scheduled class time, or
a combination thereof, in
a supervised agricultural
experience.
-Demonstrated leader-
ship ability by performing
10 procedures of parlia-
mentary law, giving a six-
minute speech on a topic
relating to agriculture or the
FFA and serving as an offi-
cer, committee chairperson,
or participating member of
a chapter committee;
-Have a satisfactory
scholastic record as certi-
fied by the local agricultural
education instructor and the
principal or superintendent;
-Have participated in
the planning and comple-
tion of the chapter’s pro-
gram of activities;
-Have participated in
a total of 30 activities with
at least five FFA activities
above the chapter level;
-Have participated in
a minimum of five school
and/or community activi-
ties; and
-Completed at least 25
hours of community service
in a minimum of two differ-
ent activities.

Eight new members were inducted into the Ione FFA Chapter with their Greenhand degrees.
The Greenhand degree is for first-year students who have satisfactory plans for a Supervised
Agricultural Experience Program (SAEP) and demonstrate knowledge of the creed, code of
ethics, motto, salute emblem, official dress, and important dates in FFA history. They were
awarded the Greenhand degree pin, made out of bronze for its strength and durability. Pictured
