Mustangs sweep week of league play
The Heppner Mustang
boys’ basketball team won
both of its Blue Mountain
Conference games this past
weekend. They defeated the
Culver Bulldogs by a score
of 64-38 and then beat the
Pilot Rock Rockets 54-42.
With the wins, the Mus-
tangs’ record is 10-4 overall
and 2-2 in BMC play.
In the game with the
Bulldogs, Heppner came
out fast and strong and led
at the end of the first quarter
15-8. The Mustangs then
outscored the Bulldogs
19-10 in the second quar-
ter to take a 34-18 lead at
halftime.
The second half of the
game was much the same
as the first. Heppner played
some great defense and lim-
ited the number of Culver
shot attempts.
They also did a good
job of running their offense
and getting some quality
scoring opportunities of
their own.
The Mustangs scored
15 points in each quarter of
the second half and limited
Culver to 20 points overall
in the half. All 13 players
who suited up for the Mus-
tangs got into the game and
contributed nicely in the
64-38 victory.
A balanced scoring at-
tack was led by Logan
Grieb, who finished with
12 points. He also had 5
rebounds, 4 assists and 5
steals in the game.
Wyatt Steagall played
well and had 11 points, 8
rebounds and 2 steals on
the night.
Caden Hedman and
Kevin Smith each scored
9 points for the Mustangs.
Hedman also dished out 2
assists and had 2 rebounds,
while Smith hauled down 9
boards and had a steal.
Jake Lindsay had a
good all-around game as
he had 7 points, 5 rebounds,
5 assists and 1 steal for the
team.
Nikolas Dias Martins
also scored 7 points in
the game and had 1 steal.
Kevin Murray scored 4
points, had 4 rebounds and
2 steals. Hunter Nichols
had 4 points, Beau Wolters
scored 1 point and had 1
assist while Gibson Mc-

Curry recorded a rebound
and a steal. Kolby Currin
saw his first action of the
year after recovering from
having surgery on his wrist
and contributed a rebound
and 2 steals.
A rivalry game against
the Rockets always seems
to lead to an exciting event
for all who attend. This
year’s matchup was another
good one and the game was
close until the very end.
The Mustangs played
well and had a small lead
at the end of the first quarter
by the score of 14-10.
The Rockets battled
back and outscored Hep-
pner in the second quarter
15-14 when they made a
very long three-pointer at
the buzzer. The Mustangs
still led at halftime 28-25.
Pilot Rock turned up
the defensive pressure in
the third quarter and out-
scored the Mustangs 14-9
to take a 39-37 lead into the
fourth quarter. A fired-up
team of Mustangs turned up
their own defensive inten-
sity and limited the Rockets
to only three points for the
rest of the game.
Heppner finally took
the lead for good midway
through the fourth quarter
and never looked back. The
Mustangs took care of the
ball and the Rockets were
forced to foul. Heppner
made several key free-
throws down the stretch to
secure the victory by 54-42.
Grieb led the team in
scoring with 16. He also
hauled down 8 rebounds,
had 5 steals, 3 assists and a
blocked shot. Smith shot the
ball well and finished with
12 points. He also had 8
rebounds and 1 assist. Jake
Lindsay scored 11 points
and had 6 rebounds and an
assist in the game. Hedman
contributed 7 points, 5 re-
bounds, 2 assists and a steal
in the victory. Murray had 5
points, 9 big rebounds and
1 assist for the team. Dias
Martins scored 3 points and
had 3 assists and a steal.
The Mustangs have one
game this weekend as they
host the Stanfield Tigers
on Saturday. The junior
varsity boys team will get
things started at 1 p.m. That
game will be followed by
the junior varsity girls and
then the varsity boys. The
varsity girls will finish up
the action for the day.

Local team makes good showing at Wrestling Classic despite number disadvantage
The Heppner/Ione

women’s high school du-
als and a tournament for
kids ages five to 16. This
year’s event was somewhat
subdued due to inclement
weather.
The high school tour-
nament is a dual format in
which teams compete head-
to-head by weight class.
The Mustang team was able
to cover only eight of the
14 weight classes and was
therefore at a disadvantage
from the beginning. Despite
the low numbers, the team
won one dual outright and
tied in another. In another
dual the team won more
matches but lost in the team
score because of forfeits.
The team’s place was fourth
in the consolation bracket.

Waite getting an additional
win in an exhibition match.
